If you met on line

Some interesting information was brought to my attention yesterday.

In U.S. Citizen Part 2 under 2.4 Relationship: If you met through an online website, you must submit a copy of the signed written consent form that the International Marriage Broker obtained from the alien authorizing the release of her/his personal contact information to you, or documentation to establish that the website is not an International Marriage Broker.

We met on a quit smoking web site and need to get this documentation from the administrator. We also went to another quit smoking web site and Rapid Visa says we should get the same from them too because we still haven't meet in person yet. I had no idea we needed this and it would of delayed our K1 visa for sure.

Hope this could be helpful to someone.

The requirements must have been changed then. My husband and I met online through YouTube in 2008, sent I-129F in August 2013, approved in January 2014, and we never had provided any form from the website.

How do you have a photo together if you have not met?

We met on the first web site in November 2013 and went to the second web site in March 2014. I went to see her in May of 2014. She has been here 4 times since August 2014.

You need to meet in person before filing the K1, it is a requirement to have met in person within 2 years before filing. If you worded things to them the same way you did here (we have not met in person yet) then they may be confused.

The letter is only necessary if the website you met through is a dating/ marriage website, not for a stop smoking website.

You only need to disclose that you met online IF the website you met online was an International Marriage Broker.

From the I-129F instructions:

1. What are the Requirements for Compliance With the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act (IMBRA)?

If you met your fiancé(e) or spouse (your beneficiary) through the services of an international marriage broker (IMB), you must notify USCIS of that fact by answering Item Number 35. in Part 2. of this form. In addition, you must provide the signed, written consent form that the IMB obtained from your beneficiary authorizing the release of his or her personal contact information to you. If the consent form is written in any language other than English, you must provide a certified English translation with the original form.

The term "international marriage broker" means a corporation, partnership, business, individual, or other legal entity, whether or not organized under any law of the United States, that charges fees for providing dating, matrimonial, matchmaking services, or social referrals between United States citizens or nationals or aliens lawfully admitted to the United States as lawful permanent residents and foreign national clients.

The I-129F form does not ask you to disclose you met online. It only asks you to disclose the circumstances of how you met IN PERSON. You only need to disclose you met online IF you met online through an IMB.

From the Form I-129F:

Part 2. Question 34.a. Describe the circumstances under which you met. [...] If you met your fiancé(e) or spouse through an international marriage broker, please explain those circumstances in number 35.a.

In conclusion, you only need to explain how you met in person within the last 2 years. You do not need to state you initially met online. You would only need to IF that website you met were an IMB.

I met my wife initially online as well, but I only wrote on the form on question 34.a: I met my fiancée [name] at NAIA airport in Manila, Philippines on Nov 3, 2013. We spent 2 weeks together. I also included a one page timeline of our relationship and how our relationship began and evolved. On this I explained how we initially met online. There was no issue whatsoever, and I didn't have to include anything from the website stating they are not an IMB.

I think we can all agree regarding the disclosing an IMB part. The OP's reference insinuates may have to verify the site ISN'T an IMB. However it is confusing, were you subject to this or just bringing it up? I think a no smoking site is fairly self evident they aren't an IMB. Also subsequent posts is very confusing as its mentioned you haven't met, but again have photos and later mention you met there 1x and her here 4x?

Some interesting information was brought to my attention yesterday.

But in my understanding meeting online and meeting through an international marriage broker are two different things.

That's what I thought too. We answered No also but Rapid Visa says they will require proof from the web site. This could be over kill but what ever it takes. Guess they want to make sure web site is legitimate?

Anyway congratulations to you guys as I see in your time line!

We met online in 2013. While he was questioned about how our online meeting evolved into a bonfide relationship at his interview. we were not asked to submit any documentation or information about the website we met on. Maybe Rapid Visa is erring on the side of caution.

Note; this was not the reason for his denial....totally different issue.

Yeah I think it's definitely overkill because my fiancé and I also met online (on a dating website) and even at my interview they only asked for the name of the website and that's it.

Thank you, and good luck on your journey!

This is the part that we must prove for what I'm told.

The administrators for both sites are going to provide us with a signed letter stating the above.

Trying to clarify: We met on line and met in person 6 months later.
