I have been a permanent resident for 4 years on the IR1-CR1 Visa. If I understand correctly, in 1 more year I can apply to be a citizen.

I'm wondering by doing so, if I'd be required to cut my ties with Canada? Does this vary from country to country?

While it would be nice to be a US citizen (since my husband, daughter and baby on the way are), I don't think I'd be comfortable letting my Canadian citizenship go. I'd rather just remain a permanent resident if that would be the case.

Any basic information would be valued, especially if you happen to be Canadian and have gone through this. Thank you for your time! :)

You are not required to surrender your Canadian citizenship. You can keep both.

Good luck!

Yay! That's fantastic news.

Guess I'll start looking in to more seriously in that case.

Thank you for your response.

You may want to check Canadian rules for dual citizenship too, just to know all the potential issues. For example, sometimes you can't work for a foreign government or else you risk your native citizenship. You don't want to be in a position that you took a job working for a city or municipality, or a US federal employee and it causes an issue with Canada! Just be aware of what can get you in the jeopardy line for your Canadian citizenship and you should be good!

Your spouse could have applied for US Citizenship 2 years and 9 months after her entry date on her initial green card. But not a day sooner. You have gone way past the now so you're clear!

God Bless
