A new search for intelligent alien life using two of the world's most powerful telescopes has been launched by leading scientists including Professor Stephen Hawking.

The telescopes will scour one million of the closest stars to Earth for faint signals thrown out into space by intelligent life beyond our own world.

Scientists taking part in the $100 million (£64 million) initiative will also scan the very centre of our galaxy along with 100 of the closest galaxies for low power radio transmissions.

I don't know about anybody else, but I am convince we have aliens participating in discussions right here in VJ. That's the only way I can explain this level of inhumanity.

It would be cool to meet ET though. Lot of money they are throwing out here on this.

Hawking? Cool ! What was his last 3 usernames, and how many of the ladyboys did he import ?

Meh.. No public money is being used here.. Two extremely large dishes (one in the US and one in Australia) that were in danger of being shutdown are now being funded for another 10 years through private funds mostly from a Russian Billionaire.

Note to Daily mail: The picture you have of the Green Bank Telescope is the one that collapsed and was destroyed back in 1989.

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

It seems like a lot of money doesn't it? But in comparison one space shuttle mission cost about $450 Million and the Hubble was about $2.5 Billion. $100 Million is budget dust in terms of space exploration.
