Letter of Intent to Marry

When I met my fiancee we had a formal engagement with 450 guests, pastors and family members present. The Church that oversaw our engagement drafted a letter that we intend to marry. It was signed by 2 pastors, 2 witness for each to-be bride and groom, as well as myself and my fiancee. Would this be sufficient as a letter stating our intention, or do we need to include something like that found in the VisaJourney document examples? Thanks!

Yes, it was formal, but it was created by the church nothing in regards to the government. The church that completed the ceremony also wanted to know that our intentions were true.

It's dated for a future time. Doesn't a marriage certificate need to be dated in the past? A future date indicates engagement, right?

OP - You may have a little bit too much personal info on your document, in my opinion.

The key phrase is "almost" ! It is custom in india to have 2 formal ceremonies. The first being an engagement. Most people who have Christian weddings, first have a formal engagement. We followed this custom, but I also wanted to have a wedding in America, that's why we didn't get married. That's also why the letter states a tentative date when we would like to marry on the letter.

No what you have will not be sufficient, because it does not state that you will marry within 90 days of entry to the US on a K-1 visa.

From the I-129F instructions, page 5:

7b. Submit evidence that you and your fiancé(e) intend to marry within 90 days of your fiancé(e)'s entry as a K-1.

You really just need the two letters of intent to marry within 90 days from both of you.

That also to me looks like a marriage certificate.

Remember the golden rule "if it looks like a marriage and smells like a marriage, uscis will think it's a marriage"

I think you are volunteering too much information using that certificate that might prove to be more troublesome than helpful.

Stick with the simple and straightforward letter of intent. Just sounds very weird to have 450 guests, 2 pastors and a certificate for an engagement. Sounds too much like an actual wedding.

I will not use include that. As other have mention it looks like a marriage certficate. It does not matter if it is not. It matter how the consular will view it.

That's awesome that you had a great engagement ceremony,

but keep the letter of intent simple.

This simple letter is working for us all, and those additional

information could cause some hiccups if they smell it as marriage.

Thanks again all! I guess that means I shouldn't include the many photos of our formal engagement in front of numerous guests! That will definitely look, smell, taste, and everything else like a wedding. I spent a lot of time explaining to my friends that I didn't get married, but I don't know if I could convince USCIS!
