Hi JoBri, I just have one question. Is it easy to get commissioned after enlisting? Obviously, I can't be an officer since I am not a US citizen so hopefully I can join the military to expedite the naturalization and then join the commission.

What I did was I first enlisted in the Army. After I got out I went to college and also went into the Army ROTC program for 2 years, the advanced program, since I already was in the military before. After those 2 years I received my commission.

What an enlisted friend of mine in the Army Reserve did was, since he already had a degree, he requested to go through the Officer Candidate School (OCS) program. That took him 90 days and he was a commissioned officer.

With my wife it is an entirely different situation. She already has a masters degree. She enlisted in Services with the Air National Guard (a part of the Air Force) since she did not have her citizenship yet, and thus was not able to acquire a secret clearance yet. Then she naturalized. She went back to school in the meantime to become a registered nurse. She will be finishing up on the nursing this coming year. When she completes that there are still a lot of unknowns that I am not sure about yet. She is over the age limit for being commissioned. Supposedly she was told by someone at the air base that she can get a waiver for that, being that she wants to be a nurse in the Air National Guard. That is just hearsay to me. I cant confirm yet if that is possible or not and it is something she needs to find out on her own through her chain of command or from the commander of the medical group at the air base. I do know that with health care the military in general does what they want more times than not, and waivers are possible. If she can get a waiver to be commissioned, being a nurse, I suppose it is possible. Her civilian boss who is older than she is, who is the Director of Nursing at the assisted living she currently works at, was being recruited by the Air National Guard for a direct commission as a nurse. So maybe it is possible. At any rate, she does not want to pursue that until she finishes school and is already a registered nurse, because she does not want to show her hand until all is ready to make the switch. She doesnt want to make waves at her unit requesting to change jobs until all is clear and ready to go. So she is going to handle all that diplomatically and at the right time.

You can't join the air force with a conditional green card. They only accept the 10 years. You can join either the Navy or Army with your conditional GC. I joined the Army with my conditional GC and graduated 3 weeks ago. Am awaiting my naturalization certificate. Good luck

Well, I just found out a few days ago that there is an age waiver for getting a commission as an officer in the Air Force for those with a nursing degree. My wife is completing her Associate of Science in Nursing in May, then it will take her a year to get her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She will be 43 or 44 by then. She spoke with the "In-service Recruiter" at the air base where she is an airman at. She was informed that as long as she is not past the age of 47 when she is done with the BSN, she will be eligible to go through the training to be an officer and a nurse at her unit. That is great news for her. So 47 is the cut off to be an officer as a nurse. Must be US Citizen too, which she is.

Anyway, just wanted to give an update on that. Nursing degree has its advantage.

Wow that is great for you two. Well I talked to the AF recruiter, they don't take conditional green card holder which leaves me with other choices.
