Just curious....what do the peeps in your SO's country classify you as?

Everyone in Egypt identified me as an "American". They would say where are you from and I'd say, "Boston". Then most would be lost so I'd say, " the United States".

Still.....lost look in their eyes so my husband would say, "she's Amreeekan", and then bingo ... a look of recognition.

I'd try the first few times to say, "no, not just American but United States" and then go on to explain that Canada is in America and so is Mexico, etc. Finally I gave up and I'd just answer, "i'm amreeeekan".

12/28/06 - got married :)

When anyone asked me where I was from I told them US and they knew what I was talking about. Some would ask me, where in the US. One night we were driving around and I heard a young boy say hi miss white. All I understood was hi miss and the other word, white was not in english, so I asked my fiance what was that word, he said white. I was laughing so much. Any other things they called me, I was not aware of.

American. Sucks that the country has almost the same name as the continent (North America. South America.), but there's no good way to make an adjective out of 'United States' (plus, it's the United States of Mexico, too.)

C.'s goofball cousins joke that when I'm there, they can start trouble in bars/restaurants/whatever, and blame it on the 'ignorant American.'

Wherever I went in India, I saw pointed fingers all over the place, and exclamations of, "Faaraner! Faaraner!" (Foreigner) Sometimes they would repeat like a mantra, "America! America!" (American) Meaning I guess to them, any white face is an American. :P

They call me Guera (white girl). . . but it's meant in the kindest way. Then again, when I speak Spanish with them, they call me Chilanga (girl from Mexico City) which I love.

When I was in Colorado they thought I was British so I had to keep saying, "No I'm Australian" to which I'd get "Oh you're an Aussie". I just say I'm from Sydney because noone realises that Canberra is the capital of Australia, most think Sydney is. Then there are always the questions about Kangaroos and yes in Canberra they do sleep in the parks in the city and they get on the roads. We even had several at my work who used to sleep on the grass out the front.

Then most people would tell me they were so sorry to hear about Steve Irwin he was bigger over there than here.
