Hi all,

I was just wondering how anyone handled the affidavits process to provide as evidence of a bonafide marriage...

  • Does it matter how many you provide, and the stature of those who provided the document?
  • Did you type up the document yourself and then present it to the witnesses so all they had to do was sign it?
  • Also, what needs to be included in those documents? (full name and address, date and place of birth of the person making the affidavit, his or her relationship to the petitioner or beneficiary, and details explaining how the person acquired his or her knowledge of the marriage)
  • Final question, does this need to be notified or anything like that?

Thanks!

1. I don't think the number of affidavits matter, people around here say they hold the least amount of weight as proof but are still good to have. I went a little overboard with mine :)

2. To be honest, I typed up one for my dad just now. He will have to look it over and make sure he agrees with it all, but I figured it'd just be easier to do it for him because he is quite busy. We provided an example for everyone else, and they followed that and wrote their own.

3. Everything you have listed are the requirements.

4. Two out of our six affidavits were notarized, but that's simply because they both are lawyers and work with people everyday who could very easily notarize it for them, so they went ahead and did it. I don't know that this carries any more weight than the others, we just thought since it was so easy we'd ask them to.

Here's the one my mom wrote:

Evidence in support of a bona fide marriage between MY NAME, Petitioner, and MY HUSBAND'S NAME, Beneficiary

To Whom It May Concern,

The following is to certify that I, [mom's name], residing at the above noted address, born [month] [day], [year], in [city], [state], have known [my name] since her conception. She’s my daughter.

I’ve known [my husband's name] since 2006, when he and [my name] began talking on-line. I met him in person for the first time on [month] [day], [year], when he came to Charlotte to visit. He’s such a sweet and gentle young man I couldn’t help but love him. He felt, and continues to feel, like a son. He’s become part of our family.

I was proud and honored to attend [my name] and [husband's name] wedding in Canada on [month] [day], [year], and serve as a signing witness. The ceremony was beautiful and special. Officiant [name] shared a very touching message and gave simple yet important advice on marriage. I honestly believe that the union of these two amazing persons will be a blessing to many.

This affidavit is being made by me for the purpose of assuring the United States Government that the persons named above have a genuine and loving marriage that was entered into with honesty and in good faith, and is not for the purpose of circumventing immigration laws. I’m honored to have [husband's name] as a son-in-law.

Thank you for your time. If you have any questions or concerns, you’re welcome to contact me via mail or phone.

Sincerely,

Fellow UKer here, we didn't submit any affidavits at all. We submitted the other usual things though:

  • Screenshots of email inboxes showing tons of emails back and forth
  • Literally like 2 Skype screenshots with IM chat
  • 21 photos of us together spanned over 7 visits
  • Couple of Paypal receipts from when I helped him out with his car
  • Amazon gift receipts going back to 2006
  • Weddings cards we received from my work colleagues and our relatives

ROC from CR-1 visa (Green Card expiration date was Nov 24th 2016)

Link to the evidence I submitted. Be sure to send evidence spanning your entire marriage (especially for K-1) or as far back as you can. Just one or two bank statements will not cut it. I primarily focused on the two years of living here since I came in on a CR-1. If you don't have the fundamentals (i.e. joint accounts/policies), you can explain why in the covering letter. E.g. "While we do not have joint utilities, we both contribute to them from our joint bank account".

March 15th 2018: ROC approved. 535 days (1 year, 5 months and 17 days)

March 29th 2018: Card being produced

April 4th 2018: Card mailed out

April 6th 2018: Card in hand. Has incorrect "resident since" date. Submitted service request on I-751 case (typographical error on permanent resident card) and an I-90 online.

April 2018 - August 7th 2018: Tons of service requests, emails and now senator involvement to get my corrected green card back because what the heck, USCIS. Also some time in May I sent a letter to Potomac telling them I want to withdraw my I-90 since CSC were handling it.

August 8th 2018: Card in production thanks to the direct involvement of Senator Sherrod Brown's team

August 13th 2018: Card mailed

August 15th 2018: Card in hand with correct date. :joy:

October 31st 2018: Potomac sends out a notice stating they have closed out my I-90 per my request. Yay for no duplicate card drama.
