Is it worth it?

Hi!

I find it difficult to look for a job on the companies near where I live so I tried to apply somewhere slightly far.

The travel from my house to the potential company I will work is 1 hr. The salary is $18/hr.

Considering the fuel costs and the time it will take to travel, is it worth it to accept the offer?

By the way, I've been here in US for 4 1/2 months and been looking for a job since I got here. I am excited on having this first job but somehow hesitant to accept because of the situation. I also have an on-going application with another company ( I had a few interviews already and I was told that I will be having another interview with the next level manager but no definite time yet). This will be the "dream" job that I would really want to have but no assurance yet as to when will be the next interview.

I don't want to pass on the current opportunity that is knocking on me coz now I realize how difficult it is for a new immigrant to be even considered for a job without US experience. If ever i accept this and the "dream" job accepts me later would it be ok to just leave?

Ohhh, need your help on this.

Thank you!

I hour commute is normal. Most people who are "lucky" have a 30 to 45 minutes commute.

You can decide if this is worth for you by thinking of it as a 10 hr shift. That would equal to having a $14.4 hourly wage working from home.

If I were you I would be more concerned whether this job is a good career move.

Good point Maria. My commute is only 5-10 minutes, but both my job and my home are hours and hundreds of dollars worth of travel away from my family and my support structure. Luckily, my wife is here with me, but this is only a means to an end. Eventually, I will move back home to be closer to my parents and my daughter.

Hello,

I would take the job until something better comes along. It always seems easier to find job when you already have one plus even though the pay may not be what you are looking for it is more than what you are making now, right?

Hi,

You were lucky enough in getting a $18.00 per hour job, you should take it since most of the people are working under $10 per hour.

Regards.

One hour in a car, or one hour on a train (no transfers) isn't so bad, it's pretty normal in some places. If that car is an SUV, or isn't efficient with gas mileage it will be more costly. If you don't have a job now you should probably take that offer. Don't bank on another opportunity if you aren't sure when it will even happen, they could lead you on for who knows how long! And $18/hr is pretty good considering the current situation here. There is a saying, "people work where the money is", some people commute 2 or more hours for work.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. I appreciate this a lot.

More than the money that I'll earn, I should really be after the experience and the contacts that I will made.

1 hour is fine. Before I moved to the US, I had no car in the UK and had to travel 2 hours to work on public transport , and 2 hours back. That added up to 4 hours travel a day in total, plus 9 hours of work on top. I also had to catch 3 separate buses to work and 3 separate buses back. Include the walking in between each bus stop, plus the wait for late buses or buses that never turned up at all, then add in a large dose of unpredictable British weather and I had it tough!!! I did that for 3 years.

1 hour in a car sounds like heaven to me :)

You're right. You have a very high-class problem, you know. :)

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
