The abbreviation is "SSN", for Social Security Number. SIN is something God punishes you for doing.

It is also Canadian version of social security number... Social Insurance Number :)

No, but this is in the Canadian Portal and was written by a Canadian.... pretty sure that's what they meant... To Canadians SIN is different than sin.. but yes, SSN is probably what they meant

What Canadian portal? This is the internet and posted in Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas

Although I got the point of what they were asking, regardless they used SIN instead of SSN. although some sin can be fun.

You see the post in the Canadian portal here on VJ. The portals are just a way the forum software organizes certain data. Anyone with the Canadian flag in their profile will have their posts appear to all others with the Canadian flag in their profiles in the Canadian portal. If you want to post specifically about something related to Canada, then you would need to actually post your topic in the Canada regional forum here > http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/93-canada/

Are people really upset they said SIN instead of SSN? I get it mixed up all the time here and call it a social insurance number by accident, it is easy to do. :)

No. It's just that you Canadians need to accept that it's not the same. You don't have any claim to call it what you want because this is not Canada.

Where did anyone say we call it whatever we want? I said it is easy to get the names confused when you have been calling it something else your entire life. There is a lot of things that are different here that take time to adjust to.

Go alone to your local social security office and explain you have now received your conditional green card and need to change the status of your SSN. I had to do this last month and I had my new SS card in about 6 days. Take along ID. I took the following just to cover all bases

  • Birth certificate ( a must... they will specifically request this)
  • Green Card
  • Passport
  • Marriage certificate
  • Original SS Card
