Hello VJ Members,

My wife's case is currently at NVC. 2 weeks ago I sent them the IV package and had submitted the DS-260 as well. Got a checklist today in the email concerning the IV package and this is what is says:

______3 - BIRTH CERTIFICATE:___________

The document you submitted is not an original or certified copy of an original issued by the appropriate government authority. The document must be an original, or a certified copy of the original, bearing the original seal or stamp from the issuing authority.

______5 - MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE:_______

The document you submitted is not an original or certified copy of an original issued by the appropriate government authority. The document must be an original, or a certified copy of the original, bearing the original seal or stamp from the issuing authority.

The two respective documents I had submitted were copies and it had attestation stamps on them. They were the ones that I had initially sent with the I-130 when I filed the petition with USCIS. If they approved the case with the same copies, then why is NVC sending me this checklist?

Are they asking for originals or are they asking for copies with some sort of government stamp on them? I'm not sure if they're certified. If not certified, then how do I "certify" them? I'm confused and would like some help with this. I tried calling the NVC but the number is either busy and/or I can't reach a customer service rep. Thanks.

You don't have any timeline information and nothing in your signature about your case.

That would be very helpful so that members with knowledge of that country would be

more likely to respond with valuable information and experience specific to you.

They are definitely asking for original copies. At NVC you have to send original copies.

Thanks for the info, did not know this at all....

USCIS ask for copy (photocopy) only, but NVC ask for original copy. The original copy means, i.e: You only had 1 original of birth certificate, but you can obtain as many copy as you want, just pay the fee for that. And NVC need that copy.

Just got off the phone with Jim at NVC and was told the first round of interview scheduling is done. When I asked what that means he told me sometimes there's a second round and sometimes not, but basically, they're done with May. Ah well. Settling in for the next few weeks while we wait for an assignment, hopefully it'll be early in June because we were so close to the cutoff.

I was told the same thing today. She didn't mention about the potential second round though.

I don't know why he specified first round when a second isn't standard or even likely, but "we're done with the first round" was the response when I asked about May interview scheduling so I had to ask what that meant. I was already betting on June so it's not as though my hopes are dashed, I'm just glad I won't have eyes glued to my email hoping for a notice all week long. Seriously hope you and I are at the top of the list and first in for June though!

Yep. I did know about the PCC but sent one in anyways, didn't want to take a chance on that, you never know with them. Just didn't know that they wanted originals for birth and marriage certificates.

I think the word "certified" really confuses people.

Example: My spouse never had a birth certificate. In her country, at the time of her birth, the birth was recorded (by hand) in a large ledger for the city in which she was born. The Department of Births, Deaths and Marriages now issues a "certified copy" of her information. It is NOT a birth certificate, since one never existed. She could never submit an "original" birth certificate. But the Department "certifies" that the information on the piece of paper they send you is correct. It has a fancy seal on the paper. So...that is a "certified copy" - not an original. It is a document that is issued by the "department" that would normally hold the information required on the document you receive.

In some countries, people are used to taking a photocopy of an important document and having a qualified person - such as the clerk of a court, or a justice of the peace - "attest" or "certify" that the photocopy is exactly the same as the original. As far as NVC is concerned this does not qualify as a "certified" copy.

Your spouse needs to have a copy of her birth certificate and your marriage certificate that are issued by the legal jurisdiction in which her birth and your marriage took place.

These may not be the "originals", but if the paper is issued by them, and contains the exact information on the "originals", then that is what NVC needs. Of course, if you have the original documents, by all means, send them in.

Good luck!

Sukie
