Hi everyone,

I am now compiling documents for my AOS. I have got married last November and I also have my SSN delivered to me.

However, when I tried to open a joint account, people at the bank rejected my application. Because my SS Card has a VALID FOR WORK ONLY remark on it.

What kind of SSC does K1 Visa holder get when he/she apply?

Did I get the wrong one?

Thank you!

This is normal. Your may need to wait for your EAD (or green card) which will serve as the "authorisation" that the bank looks to see. Out of three banks I tried to open an account with using my social security card with the same endorsement, all three wanted to see a green card to go with it.

Thank you for the reply. However, don't we need a joint account to apply for the AOS?

No. The only proof you need to send with your AOS paperwork is a copy of your certified marriage certificate.

Try to get a joint account after she gets her EAD. My bank would not allow my husband to be added as joint on my checking account until he had his green card, However, we were able to open a new separate joint savings account using his EAD.

If you have an interview, you can bring that type of evidence with you. Joint taxes, leases, bills, insurance, etc, will all also work as evidence, There is no one thing you must have to prove your bona fide marriage. For AOS, they know you have not been married long and do not have a lot of documentation yet. When you need to file for ROC, that is when you need a lot of evidence to prove your marriage.

No. Usually folk get confused on the AOS requirements

versus

the ROC Requirements.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Citibank allowed us to open a joint account, they need 2 identification verification. I used my passport and bank statements from Indonesia to verify my address over there. The lady said you can use your Indonesian driving licence if you have. I dont drive so i dont have one. At first I tried to use ssc as well, and yeah they couldnt accept it. We explained to her our situation and fortunately I met this one helpful customer service lady. Actually, they only need us to verify that we are the right person in order to avoid fraud. So you can use any other documents, try to explain to them.

I don't know if it will help others here or not, but we just have gone through this, and for us, what we did was get her an official state ID card THEN go down to the bank and file for the account. With the official state id card all we had to do was put the social security number in the box and use her State ID for the bank's ID protocol. We weren't opening a new account, but were adding her to my existing checking account. We had no problem with this whatsoever.

That was my tot process before until I was asked to provide marriage cert again and evidence of bonafide relationship. We are adjusting from K1. Is this normal? Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Do you think that is normal?

If you had an interview for AOS, then yes, it is normal. As I said, it is not needed with the AOS application, but if you have an interview, you should bring whatever evidence you have. They like to see co-mingling of finances and co-habitation proof. They will understand if you do not have a lot of evidence yet, but they may want to see some things. Some IOs will look at your wedding photos too.

I opened my own bank account here without an SSN and then we changed one of her accounts to a joint account with me not having an SSN. Had no problems. I know of one guy on here who had a US bank account for almost a year before he came over on a K1.

We managed to open a joint account with Chase with my SSN saying the same remark.

Just used my passport and UK driving license for ID, no problems.

You mean you received an RFE asking for more information to prove your relationship for AOS? That is not typical. The person adjudicating your case must have had a reason for asking for more evidence for your case.
