I've had nothing but bother with this. I think I heard a while ago that I could get the "for DHS work authorization only" and the issue date removed from my social card somehow, is that ture? Every time I show that to people they squint their eyes like.... "this is for work only". Pulling my hair out here and have some important transitions in my life coming up. I'd like to have it removed, do I just take it to the Social Security office? What do I need to take with me.

Resident since 2012, apply for condition removal early next year. Any help would be great.

when you went into the SSA office and showed the green card and asked for a new SSN card, what happened?

Nothing, because I haven't been yet, I'm going in the morning. I'm wondering how it will impact me, because as of right now there is a background check being done on me for a new job, and I don't want it to show anything funky if I go in and start messing with my SSN. So I just take my GC to the SSA then?

Let's assume we live in a world where 99% of the people we meet don't know what they're doing. That's why I need to show it to people. It's the reason my wife and I got denied for a car loan because I got denied for a credit card, because my GC has an expiry date so I couldn't build credit. I just want it removed.

Go to the SSA office with a completed SS-5 (application for a social security card) and show your green card, and you will receive an unrestricted social security card.

It's not compulsory for green card holders to have the annotation removed (but it is if you become a US citizen); some people choose to do so, however.

You do need to show the social security card if you are using it as a List C document for an I-9.

The social security card can't be used as a List C document if it has that annotation on it. Besides, he said it was for things other than for work

In our history, after we sent in all those AOS forms with a bunch of money, also paid 600 bucks extra for two EAD cards. With those, went to the SS office and received probationary SS cards for both my wife and stepdaughter. They could legally work and go to school now and I could finally add my wife to my bank accounts. Did this because that AOS stage was taking a very long time, like 13 months.

After our AOS stage they received conditional green cards, with those went back to our SS office and received very official SS cards, just like mine.

When they finally received their US citizenship, went back again so now they are listed as US citizens.

I only filled out that SS5 once for each of them with backups on two other computers, just make mostly immigration status changes and the date and having them sign a new printout. As our nearest SS office was 37 miles away and on my way to work, got their at 8:00 AM was the first in line, and with the required evidence, just showed it. They made a copy of the origial evidence and was in and out in under five minutes. Two weeks later they received their new SS cards.

You can also mail in your SS5 with the original evidence, but didn't want to risk never seeing that original evidence again.

Did make one more change to my wife's last SS5 application, she finally elected to drop her maiden name on both her US citizen certificate and SS card. No problem with that. While it was customary to do that in her home country, learned it was very confusing here. Your original SS number always stays the same from day one.

Your SSN number will be the same, just the card will not say "for work only" on it.

Oh, it was a breeze couldn't actually make it till today. Went in couple of minute wait. Asked for a new card and the guy just said alrighty and used my GC to fill in the form for the replacement, which I didn't have when I got my first one. So it should come without the extra text on there. I hope that's the end of that! I go hope for 10 days next month I just hope customs is as easy on the way back in.
