i did have a letter of invitation and notarized. the contents of my letter are intent of visit and destination, verifiable identification of my wife and me, and verifiable identification of my parent in laws.

it was very formal. the interviewing officer saw the letter and approved. my parent in laws also had evidence of financial ties to hometown. my parent in law visa was approved.

first luck is having good documentation with you at the interview. your second half of luck depends on what visa officer you get in the interview.

Letters from US family members have no bearings in the visa issuance. Your family received visas based in the fact that they could overcome the presumption of illegal immigration by showing strong ties indicating they would return home after visiting the US.

That us the standard. Letters do not matter.

interviewing officer did not look at any financial documents. we had pretty much account booklets, statement of property ownership, car title, insurance, letter of employment. none was reviewed. the interviewing officer saw the letter of invitation and ask 2 questions. and we got a 1 year b2 visa.

while we neither of us can establish a direct correlation or causation supporting our notion. it is best to have all the backup documents to your best of ability.

In the city I live in we built two additional fire houses and we had a 20% increase in the number of fires the next year. See the correlation?

As Harpa and Aaron said these letter have little or no effect on the outcome of the interview.

It does have a statistical substantive value to b2 visa outcome. You do not have a grasp of this concept.

Actually, too much documentation is on the list of signs of fraud.

Quite a revelation here that this letter is too much to handle. And somehow I was very successful in prepping my relatives. Can you point to me where in FAM or other credible source?

Sorry, your example is very partial and extremely flawed. I refer you to research design topic.

Right there, "excessive documents."

To get a US tourist visa you don't need to show why you have to go there, but to show why you must return to your country. An invitation letter doesn't help prove that. A single letter probably doesn't hurt a case, but it's a pervasive rumor that a person needs some sort of proof as to why they are going to the US. They don't need it, period.

Your relative's outcome would have been the same whether or not you gave the letter.

Awesome reference!!! though this is not related to dos document, it is a uscis document. i am wondering if dos have a equivalent worksheet. I wonder how many of those items are applicable at consular office.

I wonder what is the metric for excessibe docments?

other thoughts is what i did contradicts the uscis document and at consular level got approved.

I will repeat what i said in earlier post. My parent in laws actually brought in all their financials. What is interesting is that the interviewing officer looked at my letter of invitation and asked only two questions. those two question was mainly about my wife - when did she came to united states and when did she married. the interveiwing officer told that they were approve and took the passports. my parents in law got their b2 visa expiring in 1yr.

If you think your in-laws got their visa just based on your letter.. you are completely wrong but if that makes you happy.. thats cool :)

It does have a statistical substantive value to b2 visa outcome. You do not have a grasp of this concept.

If that was true there would not be this many post on this thread, where family members did not get the visa even after included the letters or i-134.

it does make me happy.

again, the letter has a statictical substantive value.

again, i did not say statistical significance.

you can read more about the difference here http://achimkemmerling.wordpress.com/2013/04/30/statistical-vs-substantive-significance/

hope you understand the difference. =)
