That is more a Democrat notion, I do believe, but carry on. It was a Republican Congress that decided the rules they pass should more, or less, apply to Congress as well.

Ayn Rand has single-handedly had more influence shaping the attitudes and beliefs of the modern Republican Party. Coupled with Christian Fundamentalism, it has galvanized those who think government is a cancerous sore, secular and anti-christian. Give credit to strategists like Karl Rove to have been able to blend the two, often times, contradicting philosophies, into a cohesive force against Progressives.

I never even heard of Ayn Rand until the liberals made her the evil witch of the west. I am sure most Republicans still haven't heard of her. From what little I have read so far, I still don't make the connection, but carry on, if it gives you wood thinking about her.

I've never heard of her either until recently. I was taught by union teachers in a public school though.

That's one of the main reasons I loathe Karl Rove. It wasn't enough to get the Christian Coalition into the fray, but to mix it up as well?

Regardless of your 'position' - it's useful to read Atlas Shrugged, a coupla times - just to get some understanding.

Right or wrong, good or evil, it's always useful to know the backgrounder of your friends or foes. That book is useful, just for that.

I never heard of her in my free enterprise class back in 1983, but her philosophy/ideology, which was radical, almost revolutionary, was unmistakable later on, after I had been introduced to Milton Friedman. He was one of her original disciples who talked about a free market, unfettered by government, that would bring about growth and prosperity our country had never seen before. It was hard sell to most Republicans back then, who witnessed the greatest expansion of the Middle Class after WW2. Eisenhower, for example, wanted to create a coast to coast, highway system and knew that such an undertaking could only happen on federal level. But Milton continued to preach to the up and coming economists and eventually, enough of them bought into it.

While the concepts weren't entirely new, Rand created a narrative through her fictional work, like Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. The latter soon became required reading among economists students. The narrative was not only that government stifles prosperity, social programs make people lazy leeches on society. That's why when Ayn Rand applied for social security and Medicare for herself using an alias and rationalizing why, she basically nullified her arguments against it. After all, if she could make the argument that she needed government help why couldn't every other American?

See that's the the problem right there. Libs consider Social Security and Medicare "Government Help" when most people and their employers pay a combined 15% of their wages for that "help"

By that logic I'm getting government help when I get a tax refund.
