Tax transcripts

My fiance is about to order tax transcripts online from the IRS. When he goes to order them, they ask if he wants the 'account transcript' or 'return transcript'. He's asked me to post here to find out which one he needs? I'm pretty sure it's return transcripts, but he wants me to double check.

I ordered both. The account transcript is less detailed (1 page). It is simple and what is I am using! The return transcript is longer 3-4 pages total (~2 actual front and back).

Order both if you want since they are free.

They want the return transcript. If you give them the account transcript they will not accept it.

giving them docs the will not need is just wasteful and could cause a delay so why run the risk?!

I never said give them both, I said order both. Hence, why I said "It is simple and what is I am using!" for the account transcripts.

But now that everyone seems to be using the return transcripts, I will use those. (See, good thing I ordered both!).

An account transcript is like asking to see what you owe the IRS. If you have a payment plan, or failed to pay enough, or need to see how much you paid in. It's like some doctor bills. We charged this, you paid this, balance due is this. It doesn't show income reported or actual tax return items. Think about it...tax return....tax return transcript. It's a transcript of your tax return.

Just curious, how long does it normally take to receive this? Would it hurt to order prior to NOA2 if the NOA2 is expected before next year's taxes?

It takes 10-14 days to get the transcripts back after filling the request on-line.

Ours arrive about 5 days after ordering them. We have done that 3-4 times now and each time about 5 days they are in the mail box.

I ordered 3 for the past 3 years. They arrived in about 10 days in 3 separate envelopes.
