Should it have passed or not? I'm two-sided on the whole ordeal. Yes, it could help cure diseases, but at the same time, once a woman has given up all of her eggs, she cannot produce anymore. But then again, it's her choice. What's your opinion?

I have mixed feelings as well. If what they say is true, I have many friends and family members, including myself that this can potentially help. Still don't think they told us 100 though

If its the woman who chooses to use her eggs for this, who is anyone to tell her shes wrong, and im pretty sure if someone was told "hey your going to die soon, but THIS will cure you" no one would think it was wrong anymore and be happy to support it.

i thought at one time it was wrong, but then thinking there are ppl who give up what they have to give ppl with disease the chance to use it and live, then its not a bad thing afterall.

I have mixed feelings. But, as someone pointed out, I'm sure that if I were diagnosed with a terrible illness that could possibly be cured via embryonic stem cell research, I would feel differently.

first, a few facts. embryonic stem cell research does require a woman to donate eggs...but they don't take ALL her eggs. the donor is stimulated into super-ovulation (similar for infertility treatments) and then the eggs are harvested near ovulation time. at most, a woman would produce 25-30 eggs, i think. the problem lies in the use of the hormones that cause super-ovulation. they can mess up the donor's cycles and her own hormone levels, causing infertility later down the road. there are also many associated risks with these fertility drugs, such as increased risk of cancer, blood clots, stroke, etc.

that said, i am strongly opposed to embryonic stem cell research. not because i don't want to see cures for disease...of course i do. the problem is two-fold. first, and foremost, embryonic stem cell research depends upon the CLONING of human embryos for the specific purpose of destruction. they use the term "somatic cell nuclear transfer". in this procedure, the nucleus of the woman's egg cell is removed, and the nucleus of another person's body (somatic) cell is transfered in its place. the resultant embryo is a cloned human being. this is the method that was used to create Dolly the sheep. link

secondly, research is proving that the most promise lies in ADULT stem cell research. originally, it was believed that embryonic stem cells would be the most flexible, allowing them to differentiate into any tissue needed. however, further research has proven embryonic stem cells to be dangerous..with a high probability of developing into tumors. the FDA will not give approval for human studies with embryonic stem cells because of this high risk of tumorogenesis.

recent research has shown promise that special adult-type stem cells from bone marrow and from umbilical cord that have been recently isolated, appear to be as flexible as the embryonic type.

Adult type stem cells come from:

• Umbilical Cords, Placentas and Amniotic Fluid—Adult type stem cells can be derived from various pregnancy-related tissues.

• Adult Tissues—In adults, stem cells are present within various tissues and organ systems. These include the bone marrow, liver, epidermis, retina, skeletal muscle, intestine, brain, dental pulp, and elsewhere. Even fat obtained from liposuction has been shown to contain significant numbers of adult type stem cells.

• Cadavers—Neural stem cells have been removed from specific areas in post-mortem human brains as late as 20 hours following death.

another HUGE advantage of adult stem cell research is that patients who receive tissue created from their own adult stem cells will not experience ANY risk of rejection, as the tissue is 100% match to their own DNA. it is, essentially, THEIR OWN tissue, replaced.

of interesting note, there are already 72 current medical treatments/cures being used for ADULT stem cells. Source as of this date, there have been absolutely ZERO cures found with embryonic stem cells.

i live in missouri, and unfortunately, on tuesday, voters in my state approved a constitutional amendment that approves embryonic stem cell research in the state. in my view, it's a sad, sad day for Missouri.

I'm for it 100%.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Ditto.

Researchers typically use unused embryos from in vitro fertilization. In order to conduct in vitro, many embryos are created. One by one the embryos are introduced until pregnancy occurs. After that, the unused embryos wree typically discarded. Now, they can be used for stem cell research.
