Hi,

I am currently waiting for my AOS. I received my EAD without any issue.

When I arrived in September 2012, after a couple of weeks, my wife (USC) and I went to the SSA to get me a SSN card.

It arrived a week after, with the mention "Valid for work only with DHS authorization".

Nothing unusual so far.

A couple of days after receiving my EAD card at home, my wife and I went to her bank to add me on her bank account, since I am currently applying for jobs, I will need a place to cash my checks/receive my salary.

When the bank clerk entered my SSN in their system to check it, it raised an issue. They couldn't be specific, but apparently my SSN was not "working".

So my question is: Do we, male K1 holders, need to go to the SSA after receiving our EAD to update our SSN?

TIA

Thomas

No.

A social security number, once issued, is issued for life and will never change.

If the bank had an issue correctly inputting it into their system then this is a problem on their end that they will need to rectify.

No, I don't think that's your problem. There is no such thing as "updating" the SSN: the number you are given is for life. What it says on it is also irrelevant, you have a work permit so it is valid for work. But a SSN should "work" even without a work permit. So the answer is that there is something else going on, but you may have to call hte SS office about it.

The issue is with the bank's SSN verification system as SSN are now pulled from the pool of available numbers and not issed based on where you applied. For example the 510-xx-xxx SSNs typically are from Kansas and 521-XX-XXXX are from Colorado and 124-XX-XXXX were from NY. Due to this change the verification sofeware has to be updated and if it has not then the SSN will come up as invalid. I would insist that the bank call the SSA to veify the SSN while you are sitting there looking annoyed as the number was issued by the SSA so it should be valid especially if you are showing them the actual card and not just rattling off the number.

Good luck,

Dave

No. Nothing to update with the EAD. When you get your green card you can go back to the SSA and update your immigration status. They will send you a new card without that stipulation printed on it. It will be the same number though, as that never changes.

It seems like the bank has the issue. You should ask them to do it again, and if their software still does not work properly to verify you, ask them to call the SSA. You could go ahead and check with the SSA about the problem before going back to your bank. If the SSA tells you there is no problem on their end with your SSN, then you know for sure it is the bank's problem. Make them rectify the problem, or find a new bank.
