Applying for a new SSN - K1 Visa

Hi everyone! :) My guy and I recently went to our local social security office to apply for a new number for him.

We didn't have any problems applying, but at the end, the office employee said that the Social Security Administration would need to verify the visa and it could take 4+ weeks to get the social security card, rather than the usual two weeks. We waited for my guy to be in the country for 16 days instead of the usual 10-14, so he should be in the system. The SSA office guy said that everyone who applied like this from a visa would need to have the visa verified. He just made it sound like it's standard procedure, but there wasn't anything in the guides about this.

So, I've posted a copy of the letter he gave us with our personal information blocked out. Is this normal? Does this mean we'll be delayed? Either way, I'd just like to know what to expect. Did anyone else receive a letter like this?

Totally standard. I got the same letter and my card less than a week later.

For my GC updated one though there was an issue. So make sure you go back if you haven't heard anything after 2 weeks, or call the SSA number to make sure it's in the system. For my GC one it turned out they hadn't even put it in the system 'cause the guy forgot to get some info off me :S

I got 4 of these letter in my 10 week wait. In the end they took so long that my i-94 ran out and they denied me as "your paperwork will expire before we can issue you a social security number" :bonk:

The letter I got said nothing about the document verification, only that my SSN will arrive by mail in two weeks if not then I should contact them.

My SSN arrived a week after I went to the office.

Go back tomorrow, see if a # has been assigned.

If NO # assigned, then in yer in for a longish wait.

Contacted SSA local branch office yesterday. They are still waiting for CBP to input my wife's information into their I-94 database. We have been waiting for CBP action for over 30 days, waiting for SSA for over 15 days.......

If anyone thought that VSC was slow, VSC took lessons from the CBP. Getting the distinct feeling that CBP stands for Customs and Burro Patrol...

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update... we still haven't received the SSN :( It's been less than four weeks so I shouldn't complain, but I was just hoping we'd have it by now. It'll be 3 weeks on Wednesday, so hopefully we'll hear something soon.

That sucks! AT 4 weeks Id start chasing them. YOu can re-apply before your I-94 runs out if they deny you otherwise you'll have to wait until you get your EAD. Im reapplying for mine on Friday.

Good luck today, xjoseyx! Hopefully with your EAD card you can get a SSN quickly! :)

We actually got this letter in the mail yesterday - looks like we'll be getting his number in just two weeks, thankfully. It was definitely a pleasant surprise after waiting three weeks. I didn't expect to get two letters in this whole process. The guides here make it seem more simple than it actually is based on all the problems people have experienced in this forum!

Congratulations, A&B! My guy finally received his SSN yesterday! It took nearly the full four weeks and I'm so thankful we finally had it as we can now move forward with opening bank accounts, getting him a driver's license/state ID, etc. It'll definitely make things a lot easier on us. I wish I knew that it would've taken this long though. Perhaps we can talk to someone about updating the guides that it could take longer? It seems a lot of people are experiencing delays.
