Cant find work in Florida

As someone posted, "Welcome to America" is correct. I am an American that had my position as Director eliminated in 2010. I went 23 months before finding work and had to take a job in Production Management of which is where I was both in pay and position in 1998 some 14 years ago. Him being without employment or what we consider "gaps" in his resume is not good as employers believe if you are unemployed then there is a reason you're unemployed or maybe not employable. My suggestion is for your husband to accept anything for work even if it is digging ditches with his MBA. Once he establishes himself again then he can pick and choose.

It was tough getting job here in Florida! I had high hopes before that I would easily land in a job since I had my master's degree back in the Phil. I arrived here when teachers are being laid off very now and then..that was what I want to do-teaching. My wife kept telling me to be patient. But being a workaholic like me just doesn't want to stay home ...... i got bored...she enrolled me to take CNA and I finished and eventually got licensed..still no adult care facility accepted me.. I am beginning to feel embarrassed, a little bit humiliated every time my wife put some amount on my checking account or going out on a date with her paying the bills. One day, I found myself working as a lot associate in one of the Home Depot store here in Central Florida. I didn't mind if it was just a minimum pay, I just want to help my wife to pay some of the bills we have since she's still paying her student loans. Then a year later, I became a cashier. It was a great a company to work with coz I gained respect which I didn't have when I was in my own country. For now, I am taking one day at a time and I will successfully be in the right job that I want.

Don't know if this will help but here are a couple of the problems I found and what I did to resolve them.

My resume (CV!!) was very English and was not catching peoples eye, I had to make it a lot more aggressive and sell myself much more.

Qualifications, translating my qualifications from UK to USA was not easy, I chose the closest match and explained at interview any discrepancies.

Work, I am also in computers but to start with I took a job in car sales (was pretty good at it as well), the hours were brutal but it brought money in and it kept me busy, thats what I found the hardest, when you apply and don't hear anything it tends to wear you down after a while so getting any type of job is beneficial. Also, if he is interested in doing it, car dealers are always hiring sales people, they generally give training and customers love, love, love an accent. After about 6 months or so the perfect job appeared and I was lucky enough to get it, not as good money as I was used to but stable and with benefits.

I agree with what a few others have said: 1) you have to take what you can get and work your way back up, difficult as that is, and 2) lots of places hire from within - he needs to get in the game.

Has he registered with any professional recruiting agencies? There's not usually a fee for the applicant. He can explain his background and that he would be willing to start in a more junior position, the employer would be getting a bargain and would know ahead of time that he had potential.

Another possibility is temp agencies. Not infrequently a temporary gig will either lead to full time, or result in making connections to something permanent going forward.

I came here with my degree as psychologist and in the mid time Im baby sitting. Sometimes having a degree is not helpful at all cause people thinks we cannot do something else. A reality check is need it in this cases. I also met people here who rather to die instead of doing some "bad pay job " cause they have a degree (not saying is your case) The fact is, having a job here, any job, is a blessing. I rather to clean tables as a waitress (wich I did), but im helping my husband to pay bills, and at the same time im learning new skills. No matter what degrre o master we have, we can always learn something new. Good luck with that

Malaila, I will answer your questions in a PM, but one thing I would like to point out is this my husband works in Tampa Florida on a project, while I continue to reside in our orginal location. I travel every other weekend to see him, there was a period of time that his job was in the same state as our residence but since he works on projects he travel to where the jobs are.

We have been able to do this quite well, and ROC was no problem at all.

Yes we have came to the conclusion and have discussed we would relocate, depending maybe he would travel, we are open to whatever.

There are millions of people in the same situation, certainly no criticism.

He has the added complication of an international move and whilst I have never been to NZ I am sure the reality shock must also be similar to a move from the UK.

Plus at an age where it is not so easy to obtain a job, and realise the need for a complete re think, it takes time.

And what happens when it's discovered during the background check (not listing where he's worked) Won't the employer feel that he may have hid something? In my industry, every job has to be listed going back ten years...they run background checks and verify the information too.

It's not a requirement for the standard resume to put everything down. Employers will let you know if that's a must.

We were never married, and have never gone to court except for child support, we came to visitation agreement out of court. He sees his sons every other weekend and pays child support on time. I don't want to hurt my children from not seeing their father so of course child support would be used solely for the boys to travel regularly to visit their father.

Sorry he hasnt found work...mine is a lawyer but here he works as a zone manager at Walmart. He was willing to start at the bottom just to start working and he wanted to help with supporting the household in any kind of way. Just keep trying, Tamer started going to the employment office on his own 2 times a week.
