I think businesses need to be punished for asking people impudent questions just because those people are brown or accented.

Severely.

It's strange, I am very white or don't have much of an accent -I know most people think they don't when they do, but I've been told several times I don't-. It all started when they asked for my ID and out came the Greencard, before that, everything was like a charm. People just shouldn't be mean to whomever it is.

My husband, an Irishman, is as white as the snow. Of course when he opens his mouth you know he's not one of the locals.

He's been asked for his green card in inappropriate ways. But he's not ever been treated the way you describe.

I'm dead serious when I tell you I would sue them. What you experienced was inexcusable. I don't care how badly they want to keep illegals out.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

:wow: It sounds like these ladies skipped charm school. :P When you work with the public and you have to follow regulations there are ways to politely ask for information you need and explain why in a courteous manner. In fact, if they had explained why, there would have been no issue, and things would have gone smoothly. She was just being an idiot and you are perfectly within your rights to get angry at being treated that way! In fact, I would have loved to be a fly on the wall to see her reaction about the suing comment  She deserved that one.

Hubby was a very close spectator, he says he was just waiting for me to slap somebody with how enraged I was. I hope he was joking, I'm sure I wouldn't of. The other agent says I didn't notice her reaction towards her co-worker because my stare was so fixed on the lady. I guess it was somewhat of an intense moment...

BTW your SSN is your Tax ID. There is no need to get anything else. You only need a Tax ID if you don't have a SSN.

Oh, I am sorry that you were treated like that. Hopefully they don't treat my husband like that when he gets here.

I'm sorry for the confusion, by TX ID I mean Texas ID. Thank you though, that is really good to know!

FWIW, I asked my husband to read the first post in this thread (he works in a similar job as the jerk lady, but in Oklahoma, and he's not a jerk to people), and I asked him to tell me what he thought. He pretty much said, well not only is that rude, and you shouldn't be treated like that, and you should NOT have to get used to it, but he felt this lady was in fact going against the federal/state fair housing laws, and you really COULD sue her, or at the very least get her in a lot of um... doo doo.

They may be responsible for asking for verification, but under no circumstances can they act in the manner they did. It does not matter if you are applying for a job or and apartment they are only allowed by law to ask for documentation and are not even allowed to ask "Where are you from" , or "What is your ethnicity". If you want you can file a complaint here http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?src=/program_offices/fair_housing_equal_opp/online-complaint

Don't let it slide. Sadly people in these positions usually go unreported and continue a sad cycle of treating people in a bad way.

Hope the link helps.

I'd love that, they're really nice cities.

I have no idea who the Spurs are though, haven't been here long enough I suppose. Haha.

He didn't mean to say 'Spurz' - he meant to say Go Mavericks!

but I digress.

whilst there are fair housing laws both at the state and federal level , there are also COUNTY regulations and CITY regulations that must be followed. The illegal immigrant population is just cross the border, the county line, in South Irving. Arlington doesn't want them, so they have local laws on the books that , if broken, cause the apartment management company to pay some stiff fines.

IMO, you got an 'mas grande cuolo' and it's up to you to put her in her place. The best way, IMO, is to write a letter, fully documenting what transpired, and submit it to the property owner and ask politely that your letter be put into her HR file as a sign of verbal harrassment.

There are many apartment complexes in Arlington. But have you guys looked into leasing a house in the cheaper spots, also ?

Good Luck, how ever it turns out.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

It sounds like she was confused by the two names and wanted to see photo ID (your passport) in either name to confirm it was your SSN (especially having 2 different names). I think you were overreacting to her asking for picture ID, but the following conversation was inappropriate.

That's my take on it anyway.

Reminds me of a time my ex and I went into a beauty supply store in NC... he had really long hair and took great care of it. He loved to browse hair products. So we go into this store and as soon as we walked in the door we were asked what we were looking for. My ex replied we were just looking. The clerk told us, no, you can't do that...Told my ex he had to wait in the front while I could browse the store...WE WERE FLOORED!! I lost it and caused a scene! I do not even understand the clerk's logic behind that!

I agree that the way you were treated by this woman was inappropriate, she was out of line.

I don't however believe that you have any legal actions that you can take against her, or her company and be successful. Based on what you have said, you were treated very rudely, but you weren't discriminated against. A landlord is required by law to verify identification, granted this woman went about it in a very unorthadox manner, but she never discriminated against you because of your race. You were never denied or prevented access to any services, just treated very rudely.

I believe the best chance in getting any satisfaction on your part against this woman would be to go through her company, not the courts. This post below is a good suggestion in my opinion.

I don't think you overreacted. This is not normal treatment. TX I suppose.

LOL!!! I was used to that kind of treatment when I lived up north in Michigan, but ever since my wife and I relocated to Houston, we've had the best people ever.

Both the agent and you were overreacting. They should have explained why a photo id like the passport is required. Maybe the agent could have been nicer about it. Also realize that even US born citizens have to go through hoops just to get mortgages lately. I know, I went through it two years ago. Her question about the SSN is blatently stupid. Like you really are going to admit to wrongdoing (if you really were). It is their job to make sure they do not have illegal aliens there. It is not their job to discriminate. You are bing told you should sue; do you really believe that you can? You weren't denied so it's kind of hard to prove you were discriminated against if you weren't denied.
