We applied for citizenship in February and in March my husband lost his job (layoff). Is this going to affect our citizenship?

No, this is a change that accured after you filled. These kind of things are not always predictable. Discuss this with the IO at interview when going over employment history.

No problem at all. Just make sure that you update your employment history with the officer during the interview when going over your N400 form.

Thanks...that is a relief! My brother had me worried that they may deny citizenship because he wouldn't be able to support himself...but that didn't make a lot of sense to me.

What kind of financial information do you need to prove at the interview? The 3 years of tax transcripts and bank info aren't enough? Do you have to bring proof of employment for both people? And isn't the affidavit of support still in effect up until the oath is taken? This is the first I have heard of more financial requirements. It seemed to me that after AOS there was less financial info required.

There is nothing on my interview letter that says I need to bring in any financial information (ex. taxes etc). So that's why my brother had me confused and worried.

I've never heard of losing a job being a problem at this stage of the game. It could have been earlier in the process when the affidavit of support was submitted, but the affidavit is in effect until the immigrant has 40 working quarters or becomes a citizen. Or dies or leaves the country.

Don't worry about that. Income doesn't matter anymore. That part was checked in previous stages. Citizenship is more about meeting the filing requirements and honesty about the past and if that is acceptable to USCIS.

My wife was working when she sponsored me and we filed for the AOS. Its been 3 years since she quit her job and we are both full time students now. It was never an issue during our ROC and having no income has nothing to do with the Naturalization process. Our tax returns show an almost negligible income and thats all I shall be submitting for my citizenship process. If you fulfill other requirements, don't sweat about the job loss. Its irrelavent. Such information is only recorded for the sake of verification, if ever needed. Good Luck!

Apparently, the USCIS defines a happy fraud less marriage by filing federal income taxes together and also as proof that you are living together. You can file a joint return even if both you and your spouse have zero income. As a matter of fact, the IRS recommends you do this as they may even send you a check if you have kids to support.

That I-864 becomes history when the immigrant becomes a USC, but no formal ceremony to that effect, one reason to have a party.

More than likely, your spouse did not lose his job, was simply moved to China or to some other Asian country. Corporations don't have to pay FICA taxes on you anymore nor be concerned about retirement or health insurance, and in many cases, the EPA forced them to move not realizing pollution is a world problem, and not a city or state problem.

For your interview, immigrant spouse can bring a can of beans in and swear under oath that you both jointly own this can of beans. Can't leave that as evidence as that is your shared supper for tonight. May work. We have no control as to how our corporate controlled government works, just victims of it.

My husband was actually unemployed when he applied for his citizenship and even got a fee waiver.You habe nothing to worry about.Good luck

I don't understand your post. The whole POINT of VJ is American's petitioning their foreign spouses... Personally neither my husband nor myself went LOOKING for an international relationship... just worked out that way. Gotta love the internet!

I agree with every word you said, Vanessa.

OP, don't add to your worries about your husband losing his job. It has no affect on his citizenship application. Otherwise how would people who didn't work ever naturalize, or people who didn't earn any income like stay at home mothers, etc. The only thing is that you may have save up to get his US Passport once naturalized, as should he wish to leave the country for vacation, emergency, etc. then he will need to do so on a US passport.
