Hello fellow members,

How are y'all. Please bear with me as i am confused right now with some issues.

I just sent my N-400 application and the check was already encashed.

Here are m y concerns.

1. what does it realy mean if m y check was encashed? does it mean they are processing my N-400 application?

2. If i will get my US citizenship, do i really need to get right there and then a US passport for me and my 2 kids?

3. We do not have plans of going out of the country anytime soon so i don't see a ned to get the passports right away. would this be okay?

4. I have the money saved for the passports but it is not really a priority right now..bills are my priority for sure.

5. What is the importance of getting the US passports right away after getting ur citizenship.

6. As soon as i get my citizenship do we have to get the passports right away or can we do it later when we need it?

Thanks a lot

1, It means they took your money. They put it in a box to be looked at later when someone gets to your papers.

2, If you want to travel internationally after you become a US citizen yes you have to have a US passport to travel internationally.

3, its your choice

4, okay so pay your bills?

5, being able to travel if there is an emergency - proof of your US citizenship that is easier to carry /show than a naturalization certificate - cheaper to replace if you lose it than a naturalization certificate.

6, again its your choice.

Hello fellow members,

I just sent my N-400 application and the check was already encashed.

Here are m y concerns.

1. what does it realy mean if m y check was encashed? does it mean they are processing my N-400 application? YES. Your application has been entered into the system and a number assigned to it.

2. If i will get my US citizenship, do i really need to get right there and then a US passport for me and my 2 kids? It is reccomended but not required.

3. We do not have plans of going out of the country anytime soon so i don't see a ned to get the passports right away. would this be okay? Passports are primarily for travel so if you have no plans for that, then don't spend the money on some thing you don't need yet. Your drivers license is still good as an ID.

4. I have the money saved for the passports but it is not really a priority right now..bills are my priority for sure. Do what is urgent (bills). There are a lot of citizens without passports.

5. What is the importance of getting the US passports right away after getting ur citizenship. The most important is when the person has to leave thoe country soon. Other than that, it is just a proof of being a citizen which your naturalization certificate does just fine

6. As soon as i get my citizenship do we have to get the passports right away or can we do it later when we need it? See first 5 answers

Thanks a lot

Agree with the above and want to expand on #5 to state that you CANNOT leave the US on your home country passport. US law states as a US citizen you can only leave and enter the US on a US passport. So if you need to go home in an emergency or whatever you can't leave on your home country passport. So while you *think* you won't need to passport bear in mind how long it takes to get a US passport and so if there's an emergency you won't get it in time.

If not planning on traveling, really no need to get a US passport for yourself, you have your certificate of naturalization as proof you are a US citizen. But your kids won't have anything for proof of US citizenship. If you went through the ROC conditions, got by with 80 bucks per kid for their ten year cards.

Not so with the N-400, 600 bucks per kid with the N-600 and has to be done before they turn 18. Getting a passport or a passport card is a temporary and much cheaper means if money is of concern to you. Kids can always get a certificate later in life when they are earning big money if they want one.

If you are low on cash, get your kids a passport card only. It's $30 and serves as proof of citizenship if needed. Once you have more money get them a passport book and use the card as backup, just in case.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Really? what is that passport card? That's the first time i heard about it? IS it still some kind of legal proof of citizenship ?

I will do that for sure if it's only $30 .

Thanks for the suggestions.

I just read about passport card and it should be above 16 to get one. My kids are only 15 and 10.

I think all U.S. citizens can apply for card. Adult, minor (under 16 and between 16 and 17).

Yes, you have to be a U.S. citizen to apply for and obtain the passport card.

Minors under age 16 = $40.00.
