I-130 approved in just one week!?

I'm military stationed in Japan. I mailed in a I-130 petition on 26 January to Chicago for my wife. I got the e-notification on 01 Febuary saying they had received our application and that it was being forwarded to the California Processing Center.

Yesterday (15 Febuary) I checked the status of our petition online using the receipt number. The status was said the I-130 had already been approved and that the approval form had been mailed on February 8th!

The normal processing time for an I-130 is 5 months, so since the website said our application was approved in just one week, my wife and I were naturally both surprised and suspicious. I did not request our case to be expedited.

Has anyone heard of this? Is it possible we were emailed the wrong receipt number in the e-notification?

Did you list your address in Japan as your primary residence?

There has been a trend the last few months were petitioners who live overseas are being approved very quickly. This is likely due to the fact that Direct Consular Filing is no longer offered at many foreign consulates.

This is just my guess, but either way congrats on the fast approval, now make sure you are ready for the NVC phase. There is a good guide here:

I think i read a thread previously where something like this had happend but i cant for the life of me find it! But if you do a search you may have more luck than i have!

It is possible it could be a mistake but it is also possible it could not so your best bet is to either call the USCIS helpline and find out whats going on (they have a military helpline which can be found on the website) or if the case has been forwarded to the NVC already i suggest you call them and find out whats going on. They are both generaly very helpful!

I would be a little suspicious about it aswell but i really do hope that everything is in order and you guys were just very lucky! It took us 5 months to get through USCIS with an expedite lol!

This is currently the normal protocol if the petitioner is living abroad and is CLEAR in the submitted paperwork that the PETITIONER not have a USA Address.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

When I was stationed in Panama I had a responsibility of doing the background checks of military brides. We told folks to allow 90 days but in reality when a request came in I'd knock it out in 10-15 minutes. I think in the "busy season" I'd take about 24-48 hours to do the necessary checks. Kinda nice when you do not have a backlog whatsoever.

It's the new normal. But try not to mention it too much or some of the petitioners living in the US may bite your head off :)

Are you stationed in Okinawa? If so you'll eventually go through the Naha consulate. Otherwise, the embassy in Tokyo.
