i can eat so much but i can never put on that much weight cause I have a very high metabolism :)

I was a UK size 8 and now I'm a UK 10

I am also back to my pre-pregnancy weight 116lbs, having given birth to DD 6 months ago.

I lose weight here, I like Asian food, not much into american food. I found this good jap-thai restau, really good. And the fact that we don't have a maid so I have to do all the cleaning, laundry and such plus I'm working at home as well.

I think it has to do a lot with where you live, and if you actually cook.

The hubs has gained like 15 lbs. since he moved here but he's still really skinny! Lucky guy, his metabolism is insanely fast.

I'm from NY, born and raised, and have an Italian-American granny, as well as an Irish-American one. I was raised on home cooked meals, going out to Friendly's or Mickey D's was a treat when I was a kid. Because of this, I cook, and I cook a lot. I make Peruvian food & American food, and anything else I can try and make successfully. One day a week we order pizza or Chinese (only because the kids beg me and also, I just need a BREAK!)

My husband thought we were all about "Hamburgers, hot dogs & french fries" until one trip to Peru when I made a traditional American (Northeast) BBQ for everyone with homemade macaroni salad, cole slaw, potato salad, BBQ babyback ribs, baked beans, grilled chicken, some grilled shrimp skewers, roasted corn on the cob, etc. He's still impressed with our Thanksgiving and Christmas spread too.

I am a petite frame and have a very fast metabolism but have somehow managed to put on 10lbs, which is a big deal for me - hence why I have just got back from a run! I have to agree with others, I'm not so sure whether its because the food is good over here, more that the food has so much hidden ####### and salt in it. I have booked me and my husband a dentist appointment for this month as my teeth have started to feel a bit sensitive, I don't really even eat candy. Again I think its all the sugar in things you wouldn't even dream had sugar in it! I have reigned in eating out at the weekend and started to cook more, at least then I know what's in the food.

scotinmas - agree on the reality v perception on food. it's cheaper to eat #######, but to eat as good as I did in Scotland, is more expensive.

I put on, and dropped off, maybe 14lbs, over 2 years. Problem is, like last night when I went to Hooters to watch the game, the food tastes just too good to behave with it!

Amy told me earlier that in US it's easy to find a ravioli, and even if it's not absolutely the same, it's very similar to pelmeni. :) Did you try it - are ravioli really close to pelmeni?

We do pretty much the same. I made a barbecue for my husband's family during one visit which they were all very impressed with. My mother in law has been here for a few visits. She has had Thanksgiving, Christmas and New years meals here and enjoyed them. I think that except for green bean casserole and my own stuffing a turkey dinner here or there was pretty much the same.

I gained about 10lbs and I'm now barely 85lbs. Thanks to gumbo, jambalaya, pizza, bacon and corn souffle. :)

You eat Pizza, bacon and jambalaya and weigh 85 pounds?! I have not been that skinny since I was 10!

At least this thread isn't chocked full of gross generalizations... :P

And I can't think of anywhere in the world where English, Irish, or Australian food is really seen as some great delicacy...except maybe in England, Ireland, and Australia. :P

I've lost about 15 lbs since moving. I just find myself getting out more and I have a dog that requires a long walk every morning or something gets destroyed. But yeah, the portions here are HUGE! I try to ask for a box at the beginning of the meal and stash half of it away.

My husband didn't find the portion sizes so huge here, they give a generous amount of food at restaurants in Peru too. A LOT of rice. More than I could ever possibly eat in one meal. The good thing about the big portion sizes is that 99% of the time you have leftovers. People seem to forget, you don't HAVE to eat that much. :bonk:

This is blasphemy to those (of us) whose philosophy is to stuff ourselves until we're about to be sick, si man (otherwise known as si-sickness?).

And if I'm healthy enough to exercise, I'm healthy enough not to, si man.

I actually weight less now than when I was in Italy. Here everything tastes too sweet or too salty to me, and fake. I don't really like american cheese or their lunch meat (those prepackaged ham, turkey breast lunch meat ect taste really bad, nothing like fresh prosciutto), all things that taste great in Italy, so my diet here includes for the most part veggies (they are expensive though compared to Italy and not quiet as tasty), grains, beans, some fish and meat, and pasta of course. At the end, all this helps keeping the kilos off. Love apple pie and waffles though, but those are things I only eat once in a while. People sometimes are surprised to see that I haven't become a whale since I got here, but it is really not that hard when you don't eat fast food or precooked meals. Way less food temptations here than in Italy (or Europe in general) in my opinion.
