Hello! we're ready to mail the packet tomorrow but I'm stuck at a very simple thing, The cover letter. I was looking for samples here and I noticed that some people say "Enclosed please find MY...." while some others "Enclosed please find MY HUSBAND'S/WIFE'S". Who's supposed to sign the cover letter? the previous two (for K1) were signed by my husband but now that I'm the one applying for citizenship I thought I'd be the one signing?

The cover letter is completely optional. It doesn't really matter who signs it or not.

But if you do choose to use one, it's your citizenship application, it makes sense for you to sign it - if you want to sign it. It doesn't make sense for your spouse to sign it, although nothing bad will happen if he does.

Here is a link to teh thread I started about cover letters. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/296606-cover-letter-sample-for-n-400-pkg/page__p__4492574__hl__cover+letter__fromsearch__1#entry4492574

Since YOU are applying for YOUR citizenship - it should be worded as if YOU are sending the N400 - no one else can apply for citizenship for you.

Good luck whether you decide on a letter or not. I personally think it looks more organized and whether they read it or not it made me feel better because I could check off the contents of my package according to my cover letter...I knew what I had submitted.

I looked at the cover letter we sent, and it was in my wife's name addressing her request to aid in my naturalization process. As she us the USC, she is "my sponsor" and hence the letter in her name.

So far, smooth process.

That doesn't make sense though - she can't help in your citizenship process (other then being married to you and providing documents) - why would the request come from her?

Just my 2 cents

I didn't send any cover letter, just the N-400 at the front and then the other docs below it.

Printed out the USCIS required evidence and highlighted that evidence enclosing that with my stepdaughters application.

Maybe that is why they felt more compelled to dream up even more evidence like proof of payment of a four year old minor traffic violation.

Also seems like if you send your application overnight, they toss it in a stack someplace and let it sit there for several weeks. Oh, so this person is in a hurry, lets show him/her who is boss.

AoS:

American petitions for foreigner

RoC:

American and foreigner petition for foreigner

Naturalization:

Foreigner petitions for foreigner

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915
