Good morning,

I've seen a lot of talk previously about what exactly you need with the tax papers: Either the transcripts or receipts, printed or originals.

Can anyone help me find out how I get them and which ones I actually need. Do I call the IRS?

Thanks!!

From what I understand, if your income is above the 125% poverty line, what you need is a letter from your employee, w-2, last couple of years tax return and 4-5 recent paycheck stub. But if you are lower than the 125% poverty line, you must provide with other source of income. like bank statment and assets too. I might be wrong and will let others to put more comment on it.

My opinion is that tax transcripts are better than tax returns because they come from the IRS and can't be faked - call 1-800-829-1040 - and select the options that allow you to order them over the phone and they come within 10 business days if not faster. I don't know what you mean by receipts? You can also go into a local IRS office and get them there. Hopefully an expert that has finished the process will speak to the current income piece - I believe you need the letter from your employer and the recent check stubs to prove that.

Do you have a nearby IRS office. I went to mine about 50 miles away and at the front desk I got certified copies of last 3 years. YOu can call but be prepared for an hour on hold. Do not have them faxed. NVC will want to see original ceritfication stamp.

Wow that was easy only thing is that after placing my order for the 2010 transcripts I tried to follow the same steps for 2009 and 2008 but it says that those have already been placed. Should I wait till I receive my 2010 transcript to place the 2009 and 2008 orders? Btw I know this may seem like a very noob question but under type of transcript I click on "return transcript" correct?

I think ( not sure) you have to use the return transcript option since you are looking the tax return transcript.

That was easy. As for your question about ordering... I did 2010 first. Then I clicked the option for order more transcripts and it took me one page back and all I had to do was change the year. If its saying they were already ordered maybe you've already completed that year. Try again in like 5 mins. If it gives you the same thing assume its already been ordered then call to verify. Good luck.

You can call, or order them online, and also have them faxed to you.

From the I-864 instructions: "You are not required to have the IRS certify the transcript or photocopy unless specifically instructed to do so by a Government official; a plain transcript or photocopy is acceptable."
