He's been here 2 years, and we've put in so many applications at so many different kinds of jobs. We've lost count. NOT one FR***** interview. He's educated, presentable, well-spoken but if no one will interview him how will they choose him. We've begun to consider it is his name, predjudice, else why won't even McDonald's call him in for an interview.(Mohamed T. Mohamed) We are at the end of our ropes and it's taking a toll, a big one on our marriage.

We have had nothing but problems since we met, took me three years to get him here, now I think we both regret it. Of course, we love each other, but how can we go on like this? I know no one can really help. Unless you have a job for him. But I really wish someone could. He's in school, but it's not enough to keep him happy and occuppied, we are bored sick with having no money, and no fun. Can't even afford to go out for a stupid hamburger. We are depressed and miserable and can't even enjoy each other's company anymore, or can't muster the energy and interest to find "free things" to do. We just want to begin our lives. He needs a job to do that.

I'm so sorry to hear this! Especially as a fellow muslim, I do understand how predjudice can be a real negative influence on an individual's life here. I will be praying for you guys. I know this is probably very disheartening and discouraging but, InshaAllah, may God make it easier for you!

Lucy you are Venting with Frustration and thats OK. Members are afraid to post in fear it will hurt you more to give thoughts. Well, I'll try and be Constructive and not do that. I read you post 20 times before I wrote. (Trying to read your mind as best as I can) I assume that there is a working Spouse. I assume that is you. I know married men that let thier wifes work and do nothing all day but they ask thier wife for an Allowance to get beer and ciggarettes until she she gets home from work. I have also heard these Married men say "It's a Paycheck". They never really were able to hold a job and they did it on purpose. They made the Wife feel good for a few days and Brag to co-workers he got a job "AGAIN" . Looking at your post: I'm sorry but are you sure not not being a Mother Figure. Maybe thats why this is going wrong. You said: WE put in Applications. Please don't tell me you fill them out and go to Interveiws with him. Who Pays for the Schooling? Not Free. Your Timeline indicates you spent alot of money to pass through all these whoops of USCIS and this is your Pay-Off. Not Acceptable I see. Something needs to happen but it should be on his part. Their is no Predudice in having a name Mohamad. It is an excuse. McDonalds might even name a cheeseburger the Mohamad Burgur. Work on the Marridge. To Love, Hold, Cherrish. You get the point.

Hello, I am sorry for what you're going through, it is amazing how he can't even get a job at MacDonald's, maybe he needs to find a different way of finding a job, you said he is well educated, what kind of education does he have, and what state do you guys live in ?

Find a job you love to do, and you will never work another day in your life.

Are you gainfully employed? If not, and he had a decent career in Egypt why not move there?

If their saying a cheeseburger if hard enough for now, I doubt a flight to Egypt and reastablishing residency would be a huge burden. There is a way to make-it in the US. You just have to work as a couple together. That is the KEY that will make you succeed. I admit... I'm not rich.

Lots of follow up on every job application. That's what seems to get better results.

I know that is something that I look for when hiring.

Could he maybe start his own business? if he is handy offer his services to people who need help fixing small things around the home or if he is good with gardens/planting or just do yard work for people around the neighbor hood?

He could also maybe volunteer some places too and put that on the resume? I hear thats really good in america to have on it.

You probably have already reorganize the resume many times and such but maybe its the layout or the fact that his references are not from the US?

I agree. If my husband only put in applications at the usual places - McD's, BK, Target, etc. he'd have never gotten a job. Has your husband made any friends or acquaintances (aside from you) here? Has he been to mosques to network and make friends? If not, he should. My husband found the jobs he's had through either ppl at the mosque or word of mouth from acquaintances. He would also go to restaurants, stores, etc. and ask if they were hiring and would leave his contact info. Your husband will have to be a bit assertive and not rely on online apps only. Also, it doesn't look good if you're involved in his job search. Let him do it on his own. It will help greatly in gaining his own independence.

Hello, I am sorry for what you're going through, it is amazing how he can't even get a job at MacDonald's, maybe he needs to find a different way of finding a job, you said he is well educated, what kind of education does he have, and what state do you guys live in ?

That is rubbish, 99% of the H1b applicants don't have US references. What exactly is his qualifying skill set? Maybe you'll needs to focus on the jobs that he has a qualifying skill set for rather than those he maybe overly qualified for.

Ok, this is like beating a dead horse, but I will do what no others have done to solve your problem. You need a job. He needs a job. You are broke. Now, I ask you to keep an open mind. I know that you are educated and might consider what I am about to propose as silly. But, I will go ahead and tell you anyways. Our economy is in the dumper. Manufacturing has all but vanished. One industry that has stood the test of every economic down turn has been the trucking industry. I know doctors and lawyers who gave it all up to drive big trucks and they love it. I hope you are a doctor or a lawyer. You can be working within two weeks if you want. Both of you can travel the country and get paid well for it. As a matter of fact, both of you can learn to drive and be making $120,000 within two years. You think I am lying? That will be your problem. Investigate some trucking schools in your area. Find out, by going to some truck stops in your area and talk to couples who are driving together. What have you got to lose but a few hours of your time.

Ok here's what you do, it's summer start a concessions business. Go to festivalnet.com or search festivals online in your area. I do this myself and it's good income, you can make anywhere from 1500 to 4k per month. I have a 10 foot pop up tent and some tables and sell snow cones and funnel cakes. Art festivals is what you want there all over the place!, startup cost it probably around 2 k the machine is 1300 here http://www.concessionstands.com/SHAVE-ICE-MACHINES/HAWAIIS-FINEST-HEAVY-DUTY-CUBE-ICE-SHAVER and u can get the syrups at you local restaurant supply store! Anyways it's a way to start working and you don't have to sit back waiting for something to happen. I know people that travel the country doing festivals you can sell anything you like I'm just trying to give u a fast easy solution! Good luck...

I don't buy the whole 'it's the economy' excuse. Your husband should be able to get a job. It's been statistically proven that in times of crisis or recessions some people get wealthier.

Are there not any friends of you guys or the family that could pull some strings for him? If its his first job he's going to have some trouble finding work because companies RARELY hire individuals without experience unless they are in or fresh out of high school.

This may not seem the best advice but has your husband thought of maybe changing his name? I know it's a sad thing but there is a lot of ignorance out there. And sometimes that ignorance is in the hands of people with power. So I say give the thought of a name change a chance, if all else fails. Besides, it's just a name. If it's going to secure you guy's financial future I say go for it.

I want to say it takes quite some time to find a job! I know! I have been here over 2 years before I even found one. One advice I can give you is he needs to pound the pavement. Just sending resumes out just doesn't cut it anymore. Do you know how many online applications a company gets for 1 position? He needs to make himself visible, actually go to stores etc and ask to speak to a manager. Even if there is no "help wanted" sign outside said establishment, get in there and ask. That is how I got my 1st job albeit part time. I walked into a retail store, asked to speak to the manager and asked if by chance they had any openings. She said actually yes, she is hiring. I filled out the appl right then and there and was hired on the spot. Don't give in to your frustrations and hopelessness, rather keep looking and like I said, pound the pavement, knock on doors. Good luck!
