Sorry if I have put this in the wrong spot. I was wondering if anybody has gone from a domestic flight to an international flight at LAX and how much time you should have. It will be delta airlines for both flights. I remember I did this back in 2000 and at that time I had to get ALL my suit cases including checked bags find a small terminal and that terminal was where all the international flights came and went. Not sure if it has changed since or not. Looking for any advice people have.

Thanks,

Andy

At LAX not all international flights go out of the international terminal. It really depends on the airline.

If you are staying on Delta, and no other carrier is operating the international flight, then you may go in and out of the same terminal.

You should always aim to check into an international flight 3 hours early.

When I flew from Australia into LAX, I had a connecting flight where I had 2 hours between landing and the new flight. I almost didn't make it (I was the final call). Not only do you need to collect your bags once you land off the domestic flight (and sometimes your bags could be last off) you don't know how long the lines will be through security (this is what caught me).

3 hours is safe. Boring if everything goes well and you get through easy but at least you're there and ready to board. In fact, I once had them change the terminal I was leaving from. It was only by chance that I noticed the change so arrive early and double check your terminal about an hour before your flight.

Thanks for the replies. I originally had an hour and 8 minute layover and I just called Delta to see if I could change my flight going to LAX and they let me change it for free. He said since you are calling back within 24 hours of making the flight it is free to change it. Now it is a 3 hour layover. I would rather be BORED out of my mind then missing my connecting flight. Once again thanks for the replies.

I think it was a good choice to change this. I did this (domestic - international on Delta in LAX) just 5 days ago and it took me about an hour to run to the international terminal, check in for the next flight, get through security and get to my gate.

Have safe flights! :)

You will be fine with 3 hours. I would guess you will likely spend most your time at the food area above the ticket desks. Wait there instead of through security as beyond that the LAX international terminal is quite scant on food and entertainment. Enter the security line an hour and a half prior to your flight to allow 45 minutes for the line (if it is crazy) and to be at the terminal for preboarding. Enjoy!!
