Homosexuality is NOT a mental illness, while Pedophilia is...

Pedophilia is a psychosexual disorder. This form of mental illness is an exclusive mental disorder with chronic conditions.

Causes of Pedophilia

The underlying causes of pedophilia are unclear. Learned behaviors are similar to the conditioned response theory. As a learned behavior, pedophilia may be due to sexual abuse of the abuser as a child. Because of such occurrences, later in life, the individual most likely began imitating those same behaviors. Although biological factors have not been proven to cause pedophilia, some believe biological abnormalities such as hormone imbalances could be a contributing factor (AllPsych, 2004). Others believe pedophilic behaviors may be associated with psychological, or stunted emotional development, neglect, or sexual abuse, which may have been experienced during childhood.

Researchers have theorized two main reasons as to the types of behaviors that may lead to the development of pedophiliac behaviors:(1) an adolescent's sexual activities with individuals of his or her own age could result in conditioned sexual arousals towards pubescent children, and (2) because of memory distortions that might have occurred with the passages of time, the child or adolescent who may have been sexually violated and, or abused by an adult may have developed fantasies that now place him or her in the position as the instigator rather than in the role of victim (AllPsych, 2004). Unfortunately, as a result of these reoccurring fantasies, he, or she has now become sexually conditioned to react only to children. Psychologists have also reported that boys who were sexually violated or abused are far more likely to become sex offenders or pedophiles. On the other hand, girls who have been sexually abused reacted more frequently by engaging in self-destructive behaviors, such as prostitution or substance abuse.

Serial killers get sexually aroused with killing their victims and it is a learned or adapted behavior. Pedophiles become pedophiles from being victims of pedophiles at a young age. Sexual arousal is different from sexuality. Sexual arousal is shaped by experiences whereas sexuality is something that we are born with. A rapist wasn't born to rape, just as a pedophile isn't born to be sexually aroused by prepubescent children. That's the difference.

You do realize you cancel out your own argument (for the second time in this thread) here, right?

Are you familiar with 'pyrophilia?'

It's really easy to dismiss that of which you do not understand Steve. You know this, as I know this.

Sexual arousal and attraction are very different things as you pointed out, but not in the way you think. Another man groping you in a sensitive way could make you aroused, does that mean that you're part gay? Is that a learned behavior? Of course not. A woman who gets wet when she's being raped, is that a learned behavior? A man getting hard when he's being raped, is that a learned behavior? Some of these things are very natural.

Sexual attraction is very very natural. It's probably one of the most natural things there is outside of the normal sensory that we have (sight, smell, taste, sound, touch.....). Yet people are born blind, they are born without a sense of taste, they are born deaf. Does it make them different as people? Of course it doesn't. It's all brain sensory at the end of the day that causes most of those things outside of rare/other physical issues that can occur. If you knew anything about the brain chemistry with sexual attraction, you'd know that it's a hard-wired thing that has been studied quite a bit and is continued to be studied all the time. Even to a point to where one's sexual orientation/what they're attracted to can be pointed out, possibly from the day they are born...

Homosexuality is NOT a mental illness, while Pedophilia is...

Oh Steve, you're grasping for straws here. 50 years ago, homosexuality was a mental illness. Of course, that's never the point is it?

If a man gets hard while he is being raped then he has been gay his entire life but didn't know it until doomsday.

a century ago, it was acceptable..... don't forget that.

I'll meet you half way and say it didnt have the stigma that it has now a days but I wouldnt say it was acceptable.

They aren't 'perverts.' It's a legitimate attraction.... There are a lot of people who are 'pedophiles' who don't actually 'act' on their desires out there. It's the same as the fact homosexuals have always been there and are just now in the past 20-30 years being able to come out of the woodwork safely.

Let me remind you what he wrote. - "This is my attempt to make pedophile situations safer for those juveniles that find themselves involved in them, by establishing certian rules for these adults to follow," the author, Philip R. Greaves 2nd, summarizes the book. "I hope to achieve this by appealing to the better nature of pedosexuals, with hope that their doing so will result in less hatred and perhaps liter sentences should they ever be caught."

This guy is a pervert and we need to protect our children from him.

First, Steve was right about pedophilia being a disorder. Pedophilia is classified under sexual and gender identity disorders in the DSM. Criteria for diagnosis includes:

A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with prepubescent child or children (generally under age 13).

B. The person has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.

C. The person is at least 16 years and at least 5 years older than the child or children in Criterion A.

There are different types, some are attracted to only children and others are attracted to children and adults too. There's some who are attracted to only females, some attracted to only males, and some who are attracted to both.

Some reasons they've found as a cause of pedophilia...the top one is abuse, somatic disorders (these disorders really have no identifiable physical origin but are often phychological problems that present themselves as physical problems...I don't know much about these), sexual dysfunction disorders (these people usually seek children because they feel inadequate or fear embarrassment with another adult), sexually deviant behavior (these people typically get gratification through "unusual" or strange things), and the idea of sex as a requisite for affection (most common in cases of incest).

While these things have all been found to be causes of pedophilia, not everyone who was sexually abused becomes a pedophile. In fact, more don't become pedophiles than do.

Just because this sexual preference seems weird to us, it doesn't mean it's a disorder unless other criteria is met. If someone can't function sexually (this includes erection and orgasm) without looking at child pornography, then it's a problem. If the person has fantasies and then acts on them with a child, then it's a problem. No matter how strange or unusual we think it is, it's not wrong for people to have these types of urges, thoughts, or fantasies unless they act on them or take part in some type of illegal activity.

As for what Paul said about someone becoming aroused when being raped, arousal isn't something we can control. Sexual arousal during a sexual assault is very common and is often something that makes victims feel ashamed because they think they "enjoyed" it if they became aroused or had an orgasm. The body releases so many hormones, especially during a "fight or flight" type situation like rape, you can't control how your body reacts. Sexual arousal happens in the brain, not just between your legs.

Yet the paragraph below suggests it's not:

Hence the difference between a pedophile and a child molester. ;)

Thanks, Amby - that's pretty much in line with what I've read before. Just speaking as my opinion based on what I've read and from watching documentaries on sexual predators, is that sexual arousal can be shaped by experiences, particularly traumatic experiences. There was a movie that came out a few years back about people who got off from car crashes as an example. I don't think people are born with deviant sexual behavior - that it mostly is an adaptive or learned behavior. From what I've read, most pedophiles are men and rarely ever women.

....pedophiles become conditioned to react sexually to younger under-developed bodies. The article goes on to explain that most pedophiles probably began masturbating during boyhood to fantasies involving immature bodies. The article explains that these boys have become so conditioned to younger under-developed body forms that they need to have those exact body images every time in order to obtain or create sexual gratification; because of this abnormal need, these individuals are classified as pedophiles. However, the bottom line here is quite simple; pedophilia and child molestation should never be looked upon as normal, but as a disease (National Alert Registry, n. d.).

Some people are born a**holes. Some people are born ... less intelligent or more intelligent than others. Some people are born homosexual. Some people are born transgender. A lot of behaviours are learned but narcicism, socio-pathology, psychopathology.. people are born that way. Some people think killing animals is funny but their parents are vegetarians. Some people are just born "different".

I don't like heavy metal music. That's not a "learned" behaviour. You could say that it's learned except I like some operas, I like instrumentals, I like pop music, I like R&B, country only some of which I was exposed to at an early enough age to consider it "learned"... it's all preference based on wiring in my brain that determines what i find "pleasant". I was born left-handed. My brain was wired that way. I was born with musical ability, my sister is tone-deaf. She didn't "learn" to be tone deaf. My grandfather "learned" to be right-handed because left-handedness was beaten out of him.

Some people get turned on by balloons. Or feet. Or chickens. Or animals in general. I don't think it's "learned". I don't think it's learned to be that way, I think it's learned NOT to be that way.

If you were told that it's okay to be naked all day, or have sex with whoever you want whenever you want. If that "brain barrier" was taken down you'd do it. It's your own moralities that STOP you doing "deviant" things... because society is the one telling you it's deviant. I don't drink or smoke or do drugs. That's learned behaviour and also preference. I like guys, that wasn't learned behaviour... my brain just finds guys more attractive sexually than girls.

Society tells us what is wrong and as someone else pointed out.. some paedophiles don't act on their feelings because society tells them it's wrong... I personally am not into balloons, or kids or animals. I don't agree with polygamy or organised religion. Some of my behaviours are learned. Most of my moral compass is learned, but some people don't HAVE a moral compass. Some people just don't care or don't realise they're supposed to care.

Some deviant behaviour, like your car crash example is possible to be learned. Like how you associate a particular smell with something. Someone probably got turned on by something in the scene, their brain registered that as a sexual arousal mechanism. That's why some people get turned on by choking or murder (though serial murder is usually about power and control). It doesn't start off like that, it starts to get that they can't get off without it.

There's this weight-loss thing you can buy that works or tricking your brain. You eat a piece of chocolate or something and then smell the weigh-loss thing which is apparently pretty disgusting. It's tricking your brain into remembering that smell the next time you think about eating chocolate. Strange but true. Used to be they would try and get rid of homosexuality the same way. By negative reinforcement any time a homosexual feeling was felt. Did it work? No. It it was learned behaviour it's much simpler to change, brain wiring is a little more difficult to control.

Steve is just looking for whatever makes him feel comfortable with the world he lives in.... I think part of it is being a parent for him, the other blind ignorance.

Oh, stop it! Stop it! How did you know????
