The visa will be issued in the name in the passport and the green card with the name in the visa. So if your wife intends to change her name, it will be a hassle and hundreds of dollars to change her green card once it is issued in the maiden name

As such, no problem traveling with her maiden name. If she travels with other documents in her married name, carry her marriage cert. with her to prevent issues

Good luck

Except, the airlines are about to implement the new DHS policies (just a while ago outlined by Kathryn) requiring every traveler to have matching names on all documents.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

What's that, Bob? Can you please provide me the link?

My wife's name in the passport and GC would match. She still has maiden name in the passport. So, GC will also be in the maiden name.

It will not be a problem, my wife's maiden name is in her passport and the greencard and Visa use my last name. If you think there may be a problem you could have your wife take the wedding certificate with her which will explain the differences in the names.

Thanks dan_ling!

I thought they would issue the visa and greencard in the same name as in the passport. So, that concept is wrong, right?

Oh, my bad! I meant to say that when they issue the Visa it will be with the same name as in the passport since it is placed in the passport, but my wife's Greencard is with my last name. When I booked her flight to come to the US I booked under her maiden name since she did not get her green until she got here. Any future flights will be in her married name and she will carry the marriage certificate just in case there is a problem.

Thanks OBX! That's what we did last time too. And we didn't have any issues :star:

She still has her maiden name in all the documents and we don't have any plan to change it until her Naturalization.

The reason I would book my wife's name under my last name when we fly together is so that when applying for the 10 year greencard I could use this as proof of legal marriage because they will be looking for evidence such as this, joint accounts, and other papers with both party's name listed together. If we use her maiden name on the ticket and we sent this in when with other evidence for on going marrige, they may question why we did not use her married name when we took our trip together. The 10 year greencard is just another step in this long process.

Just out of interest they won't question the flights in maiden name, not when you show them the passport still in maiden name. The fact you took flights together is evidence enough.

Passport and ticket don't need to match, tickets only need to match any form of Government ID, for me this was my greencard and I was never questioned or asked to show marriage certificate. Since being in Aus I've changed my passport to married name and now it will all match. I did this because it was irritating to have to think about. Now I have everything in my married name it's makes much more sense.

Hey!

I'm new here although I've been reading for quite a while now.

My husband (the USC) and me (german wife) filed I-130 (CR1).

When we filed the petition, everything was in my maiden name. When he visited me in Germany after, we changed my maiden name to his last name. So I got a new passport, new ID with my new name but it also provides my maiden name.

So, when everything goes well my husband is coming here during the time my interview would be issued to take me home (such a sweet idea of him <3). Since my passport is in my new name but all the documents of the visa process are in my maiden name, I'm afraid there is going to be an issue at the CPB. Like I said, my passport says both names and I also have the marriage certifice if the CPB needs to see it. Will it be ok?

Thank you in advance. This is bugging me for a few days already so I'd be glad if you can help.
