In the US, people aren't oriental, rugs are :P

It depends on who you speak to. Personally I prefer Oriental. So does my brother. Possibly it is an influence from when I lived in London though. My co-workers drilled that into me, that and the correct way to pronounce Tottenham Court Road.

edited to add COURT. It's been a while. Probably f**ked up the pronounciation too.

The PC term here in the US is Asians....they do not refer to themselves as orientals

'They' or the PC police in the US?

My Asian friends refer to themselves as Asians......something you dont quite understand....who are the PC police??

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

I had a friend (of chinese) descent who referred to himself as an oriental (I presume, to distinguish himself from Indians, Thai, Korean people's etc)

Quite the contrary. Some of us do prefer Oriental over Asian. As I said, it depends on who you ask. I am fully aware of the what the PC term is.

I can only tell you that here on the general West coast of the US where I live, the ppl refer to tehemselves as Asians. We generally dont connect ppl from Indian, Pakistan, etc as being Oriental nor Asian. They are usually referred to as the country from where they originate.

Asians is a broad term that is used for ppl from places like Japan, China, Korea, SE Asia including VietNam, thailand, Laos, etc. Everyone else are refered to as to their home country. I.e Pakistani, Eastern Indian, etc. We would never think that India is a part of Asia although I know that it is.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

Getting back to the original topic, the government "thinks" that this may be an AlQuida plot but haven't connected it yet. Is it possible this is the reason for the Aug 22 reply date for Iran to respond to the UN's nuclear proposal? See: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=16208

Could this be Iran's response? Just trying to connect the dots.

I think it would be wishful thinking to assume that Iran is calling the shots here.

Certainly not wishful thinking. Only supposition. Iran has promised a "painful response" to any interference to their nuclear program. The dates are too close to ignore without at least thinking about it.

I don't know anything about it other than what I have been reading here and have seen on a few news broadcasts. I don't know if it's connected or not. Justs seems rather odd that the dates are so close.

My Oriental (Asian) wife understands and could care less.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Let me get this straight.

Terrorists plot to blow up airliners in the sky, using dangerous liquid explosives disguised as shampoo, soft drinks, etc., which they will take onboard in their carry-on luggage, and then mix together into deadly combinations while in-flight.

So in order to keep us safe, travellers must dump out everything that might be a liquid explosive (other than baby formula and prescription medicines) into a trash can. Never mind that they would be mixed with other... potential liquid explosives. Which could cause a... potential explosion.

pouringoutliquidspq0.jpg

And to top it all off, travellers are now being thoughtfully provided with packages so that they can choose to mail these potential liquid explosives back home, instead of dumping them into the airport can of potential liquid explosives.

Whew. Disaster averted. I feel so much safer now.

You've got to love us Americans. India is a country in Asia and yet we don't refer to Indians as Asians, however, India is clearly not in North America and we refer to the natives as Indians.

I just found that funny. Carry on.
