LONDON - Authorities in London thwarted a terrorist plot to blow up an aircraft in mid-flight between Britain and the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage, police said Thursday.

Police arrested a number of people overnight in London after a covert counter-terrorist operation lasting several months, police said in a statement.

Security at the country's airports was increased and additional measures were put in place for all flights.

British Airways advised all passengers that they would not be permitted to carry any hand baggage on board any aircraft departing from any airport in the country.

Security at all airports in the UK has been tightened and delays are expected. MI5 has raised the UK threat level to critical - the highest possible.

Major delays at all UK airports......and Heathrow has stopped checking lugguage all together at the moment.

Scary.

Devilette left the US last night on a 7:15pm flight... she was supposed to be arriving in London at around noon London time to be reunited with her honey... I'm anxiously awaiting word that she made it ok, despite some delays, perhaps....

Liquids, such as hair care products, were also barred on flights in both Britain and the U.S., raising the possibility that authorities were searching for a liquid explosive.

What does this mean? What kind of liquid can explode? Gas? Surely that would have smelled right?

Were they trying to release chemical agents into the air? :(

If the word you are looking for is death I agree

i can think of one type of liquid that explodes

fae

Thermobaric weapons work by first expelling a cloud of explosive mist using a small charge, then igniting it with a second charge.

They consist of a container of either a volatile liquid or a finely powdered solid which could be an explosive or metal powder and two separate explosive charges.
