Mom accused of driving impaired with nine kids proclaims innocence

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - From what officers describe, she's a poster mom for what every parent shouldn't do. The 27-year-old says it's police who have it all wrong.

Latoya Johnson was arrested on nine counts of child endangerment and a charge of driving under the influence back on Thursday. Her arrest, near Oakey and Rancho, followed a handful of 911 calls, describing high speeds, weaving around the road, narrowly missing people in crosswalks and even a hit and run.

The mother of nine is assuming the role of a victim in this dangerous driving episode. Johnson is blaming a "medical episode" and is disputing accusations that she was high on prescription medications.

"My story is the truth. I'm not gunna lie about nothing. All of these accusations are lies. They're all lies," said Latoya Johnson, who wants her name cleared.

Less than 24 hours after getting out of jail, Johnson is again behind bars for new charges. The 27-year-old mother was arrested on an unrelated home invasion charge after her one-on-one interview with Action News. Family and friends allege she "kicked in her sister's door Tuesday night and things quickly got out of hand from there".

Prior to getting arrested again, Johnson had insisted that she's a "good mom" and "has it together for the sake of all of her nine kids."

"I'm not a bad mama, I'm far from it. Not too many 27-year-olds have all their kids, and I'm trying to do my best," said Johnson.

Police say she appeared to be highly impaired when they arrested her. Investigators allege she easily could've killed herself, her kids or an innocent citizen on the road.

Johnson's arrest report alleges all nine children were not properly restrained inside the van. Some of those children were allegedly crawling around inside as she was driving.

She admits she may have been driving like a maniac but claims she fainted from "high blood pressure".

"It was nothing I could do. I was medical. God knows what happened. I don't know, I fainted," Johnson went on to say. "It's not no drugs involved, not no alcohol, nothing. It was my high blood pressure pills."

Police documents say Johnson admitted she "takes the medication Xanax to control her blood pressure". Those documents explain that officers uncovered a half empty bottle of that anti-anxiety medication inside Johnson's car, which had been filled two days prior. Officers also reportedly found a half empty prescription bottle of the painkiller Hydrocodone.

"All my charges are getting dropped because they don't have any evidence to prove I was intoxicated on drugs," added Johnson.

The Clark County District Attorney's office says this young mother is far from off the hook. A formal criminal complaint is yet to be filed because of pending blood tests.

Johnson's nine children were taken into protective custody following Thursday's incident, however she says her mother has since taken in those children. No official word on where those children will be placed.

According to Johnson's arrest report, she was on her way to the State of Nevada welfare office to attempt to collect food stamps. She allegedly told police her children "had not eaten in a few days" and officers observed the children to be both hungry and hot in the vehicle.

Johnson is now being held on $3,000 bail for the most recent home invasion charge.

This is just another example of the failure of freedom and personal choice here, which does not teach consequences. Once again everyone else has to pay for her choices, yet this is still called freedom.

It is truly sad, when you see a third or fourth generation welfare family: The misguided implementation of welfare policies have indeed created a permanent economic under-class. The most disturbing effect of this is, the expectation that welfare will be a lifetime entitlement. There is a dramatic shift from an expectation that through hard work, it is possible to "get ahead"; to the expectation that welfare is an acceptable lifestyle to "get by". Until this situation is corrected, massive amounts of resources will be wasted on the lazy, at the expense of the truly needy.
