Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

My old commute in Israel was 90km one way (Haifa to Ra'anana). I was putting close to 1000km a week on the car. Thank goodness it was a company car and they paid the gas and depreciation.

My current commute in Chicago is about 20miles one-way, but I ride commuter rail. I walk to the local train station near my home, and I walk from Ogilvie Transportation center to my office downtown. I typically only drive on weekends and occasionally in the evenings. I put less than 5,000miles on my car this past year.

Damn, I feel for you... that traffic gets horrendous. Especially getting out of Ra'anana in rush hour... all those lights on "4". I'd imagine you swung by to "2" by Netanya? Even there it sucks most of the time.

My commute at the moment is 12 miles one-way.

Yeah, I used to come out of the Ezor Hata'asiyah (Industrial area) on "4", go north till Tzomet Dror and cut over to Poleg (near Ikea) to continue north on 2. Mornings are worse, it would often take me longer to do the last 10km coming into Ra'anana on 4 than the entire first 80 km through Zichron, Hadera, Netanya... I used to cut through the Hadarim prison and Moshav Batzra. That saved a bit of time, most days.

I did it for 4 years. The things people will do to try to keep a sinking marriage alive. I cut the commute loose along with the marriage when it was obvious neither one was sustainable.

I only live about 4 miles from work now. Used to drive 25-30 miles one way. I used to get gas twice a week, now I can usually go about 2-3 weeks before going to the gas station. I hated that drive. I used to almost fall asleep just about every day.

That's pretty much how I go to Haifa when I'm there.

There's new interchange in Ra'anana now (one light south...or north maybe... of Tsomet Ra'anana, - the one off Weizman - I forget what it's called), caught me by surprise last year, a weird new ramp to get onto "4". And yes, those 10km to Netanya turn are just ** awful.

There's also bunch of damn new roads in the north now... got lost driving to Nazrat-Illit

Thank you for sharing everyone.

My husband left Austin two years ago for a job in Glendale. He owns a house there so he's just renting here in Santa Monica. For three weeks now, we have been looking for a new apartment in Long Beach, La Crescenta-Montrose, and Glendale. The lease in this apartment will be up in the first week of May.

My baby likes being near the beach; however, he'd have to drive 14 miles farther from home to work if we choose Long Beach. The thing is both La Crescenta and Glendale are not my type. It's not about the absence of beach there but the feel of their communities. People in Long Beach seem to be very carefree and outgoing. Houses in Glendale look like funeral parlors. La Crescenta isn't attractive either but appears better than Glendale.
