America...your bread sucks.

The bread in the states is downright disgusting and how I crave for Warburtons again :(

Also what is up with the Bacon? It's just not right certainly not enough to fill you up as part of sandwich or fry up. Oh pork sausages, STILL not found any decent sausages. Oh and the selection of chocolate is non existent, there is peanut butter in everything.

Yeah, the concept of back bacon just doesn't seem to exist here. It's all streaky bacon. Hubby even asked our local meat dept to cut him back bacon - he had to describe it and it honestly never really came out right. He just gave up in the end - all streaky for us. :(

Let's not even talk about the chocolate. LOL

Try asking for Canadian bacon.

In Brasil we buy bacon in slabs. We buy pieces of the slab (like half a kilo, or 1 kilo, etc). I like it better than the thin sliced ones I see here 'cus over there we can then either slice, or cube it, etc and use in several different ways and different thickness.

call me crazy but the bread here basically tastes the same as it did in Canada...

Okay. You're crazy, Marilyn. :hehe:

Try asking for Canadian bacon.

Canadian bacon is not Canadian bacon if you go any further south than Buffalo, NY. What they call Canadian bacon here is actually just ham rounds.

YAY!

Hubby thinks my bread issue is all in my head too. He just doesn't get it!

The closest I have found is a sour dough bread from Publix supermarket. It is completely tasteless - so the things inside the two slices aren't tainted by sweet yurkness.

Now bacon and sausages, I miss. I'd sell ma granny for a Tesco's Butchers choice banger right now. And it scares me just how much fat comes off the bacon when you cook it.

I could make my own bread, but between the full-time job and my general inability to do anything right in the kitchen....it's never going to happen. I keep having to remind myself that it is better not to eat to much bread. In the UK I loved bread so much I could eat a whole loaf.

Closest cheese I have found. Cabot's Vermont extra sharp cheddar. To me it tastes like mild cheddar, but the delicate US pallet thinks it's strong. It is very yummy (but expensive)

One obsessed with the flavor and texture of bread can learn to bake it to taste at home. Most American bread is not very good, it's true.

I know for sure our bread doesn't have HFCS, and even the "healthy" (like healthy choice) ones here contains it. Puerto Rico doesn't have a huge variety of brands in sliced bread so I can't find anything healthier. So instead, I'm doing my best to cut breads and eat other things (like rovira salt and water crackers).

Why America, why? Your bread tastes like cake and lasts a ridiculously long time in my cupboard without going green. Lots of my food time is spent dreaming of white bread cheese sandwiches or white bread bacon butties with butter and HP sauce. Warburtons blue packet usually. I spend wasteful dollars on all these different kinds hoping one will taste normal. I don't fall for your 12/8/6 grain, wholewheat, bran nonsense anymore because I know they all taste of sugar and ruin my toast and sandwich experience. The list of ingredients are enough to send the health board into a spin.

It's not normal and it hurts.

JoJo - a bread lover from the UK.

That's why I only eat italian and french bread!

I'm having the same problem. Even the Italian and French loaves I found seem a lil sweet to me and they re way to soft to be able to slice them nicely.

Try the Greek pita and Italian wraps. They are not sweet at all and they are delicious. You just have to eat wraps instead of sandwiches, but you wont regret it.

Panera Bread has some french baguette that is really good. Not sweet, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I love it, just a bit too expensive.

I would like to second/third/fourth and so on this thread! America! Your bread sucks balls and your cakes are overly rich or dry. I have been making my own since after about a week I got here, but not actually attempted to make any bread yet. I will soon though. I've actually got a stomach ulcer at the moment, so cake and bread are the last of my worries haha! My dad is coming to visit in May and I am trying to encourage him to being me a loaf of Warburtons so I can put it in the freezer for emergencies...

Mrs. Bairds Bread > anything else that's made in the states imho.

You have to get away from the national brands/high in preservative ####### they have out there......

I love Mrs. Bairds too because it's fresh!

Store brand bread/wonder bread will sit there for a week or so on the shelf... Mrs. Bairds is fresh daily or sometimes every other day depending on where you are.

I keep seeing the "I don't have time to make my own bread" excuse. Seriously, get a bread making machine. You control the ingredients, so it is still home made. No need to do all the kneading, waiting around for it to rise, etc. If you really want good breads, this is the way to go!

Yey, I once found Pumpernickel at Safeway! I'm not sure if they still have it, will have to check soon! Pumpernickel is just ridiculously good for you!

Aubrey, I absolutely agree. We have had one for three years now and not only does it pay for itself, you can make any delicious sort of bread you like (I love nuts - bread & nuts - awesome).
