Nothing is as simple as it sounds or seems.

It's possible (probable) that wal-mart has this policy to protect it from a charge of looking the other way in a case of possible child porn.

Sure we might have the common sense to tell the difference when we see it but do you expect wal-mart to leave it up to some pimply faced kid to decide... and if he misjudges only to find out later some child was being molested... and wal-mart even saw evidence of it and did nothing.

Where things went way to far is, the way the Cops made a major case out of it... but then again it might have been, some picts were a little more than baby's rump sticking up.

Bottom line, this is what you get when we run small businesses out of business.

When you shop at the local shops, people get to know you and are more likely to make a common sense call.

Just goes to show that no good can come from taking pictures of naked children invading people's privacy... regardless of the situation...

fixed

Sorry, where's the invasion of privacy? They dropped the film off at a Walmart. They didn't ask for the clerk's name. They didn't establish any type of relationship other than a customer. By dropping off their files/film they made their private life open to the public per se. Nobody invaded their privacy. Anyone who thinks they're going to have images produced by a blind man or someone wearing an eye mask is an idiot.

I have a friend who's complete business is data retrieval and analysis. Most of his clients are prosecutors or people who've taken their computer to some big box store to be repaired, only to later be arrested after the tech finds porno on their computer. Privacy means NOT handing it over to strangers.

There was nothing wrong with that statement... Not everyone thinks its a good idea to take pictures of nude kids... I dont see any need to take pictures of ones naked children and then take those images to walmart.. I dont think the kids should have been taken away.. but the whole thing was one mistake after another... Walmart did the right thing... pictures of nude children deserves a call to the police... the photo rep at walmart isnt judging.. they are just doing the job by reporting possible child porn...

While the photos are not evidence of child abuse, they are probable cause for investigation. The clerk and Walmart acted appropriately in contacting the authorities.

However, I feel that the authorities may not have handled this very well. All that should have occurred is an interview of the parents and an interview with the children, and then everybody gets sent home. It's important to remember the bathing suit rule. That is, no child should be photographed, touched or tickled in areas that would be covered by a bathing suit.

agreed. they could be found negligent and culpable if they didn't report it.

Maybe I'm odd, but I find the whole "taking pictures of your nude babies/kids" thing to be weird, creepy, and pretty damn offensive.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

True Charles...I dont want to seem like I am bashing anyone at walmart, but they are not the brightest lights in the room for the most part... Imagine if your 3 girls were staying with relatives and a relative was molesting them and had taken pictures of them in the tub....he took the images to walmart for development... would you want the decision of it was a sicko taking pics or a parent that thought it was something cute to save for a lifetime... to be left up to the walmart employee? Too many pervs out there to leave the decisions up to the walmart folks... the bad part is that the way the system is setup.. the kids get pulled until someone can find out what happened... just like USCIS the legal / child protection system takes far to long to determine reality in a situation.

I have bath time photos of my girls when they were babies. This is like a rite of passage. Every kid needs to be embarrassed when they are teenagers by looking at baby pictures of them in the tub.

And genitalia? For girls? There's nothing there to see . . .

This is certainly not the first instance of this happening. You'd think by now that people wouldn't take their naked kid pictures to be processed at Walmart.

I guess I'm sick and reprehensible. I have dozens of pictures of my daughter in the tub alone and with her cousin. I have pictures of her naked butt so I can show her her Mongolian spot when she is older and it has faded. I have pictures of her bleeding diaper rash because I was freaking out about it and I wanted to send the pictures to my mom, a nurse and mother of eight, so she could advise me or at least tell me this was not a flesh-eating disease. I have pictures of her and another cousin after they stripped naked and were running around in the blow-up pool on my parents' back porch.

I have movies of her "shakin' her booty" in her panties.

I let her swim in public without a top.

Sick and reprehensible happens when you start trading or selling them on the internet. Keeping to yourself or sending to family members...I think that's pretty normal.

It's when it becomes a business or a hobby...then it's a problem. Essentially you're expected to take the same care of those precious memories as you would with your child's physical being. I mean, you wouldn't leave your infant or toddler at Walmart with a stranger...you wouldn't rent them out to someone on the internet. But you'd let them stay at Grams for the weekend. I think it's common sense...what's appropriate, and what's not.
