All the visa cost us was the filing fee for USCIS, and Visa fee at the consulate.

For the most part all a lawyer does is give you a questioner that you fill out, and the lawyer transfers your answers to the I-129F, G-325A forms.

Its just clerical work. You dont need a firm or lawyer unless there is a potential problem.

If you have a straightforward case, no complications, illegal entries to the US, etc. and you feel good and comfortable about been able to follow directions, then you can do the entire process all by yourself without having to pay for lawyer.

Frankly, we don't know hardly anything about the OP, so we certainly don't know if he/she can do it themselves. It does take somebody with confidence in their ability to read carefully, interpret literally and accurately follow directions, to successfully "do it themselves". Not everybody can. Further, we don't know anything about the case except the location of the petitioner and beneficiary. We don't know whether there are complicated issues, potential need for waivers or criminal records to navigate.

He found this place. That's a good sign. He'll know soon enough whether he can do it himself.

Read the Guide, get the forms, fill them out yourself. If you have problems, come to VJ and ask your questions. I would suggest reading the instructions at least 3 times and make notes on what is required. Most of us have done this ourself and had no problems. Good luck.

I forgot to add that you need to read this forum a lot to get familiar with the questions others have. It is a great forum with tons of good information.

Read the guides here on VJ, use the example forms here on VJ as a guide, get the forms from the USCIS website and do it yourself.

It doesn't matter where in the country you live; you can hire any law firm anywhere in the U.S., if you choose to do so for your I-129F petition.

I highly recommend (and am not connected with, except as a satisfied customer) Foster & Quan, the largest immigration law firm in Houston. See http://www.fosterquan.com and contact them with questions.

If you scope these forums, you'll find many stories of people who were hosed by cut-rate or fly-by-night law firms. Cheapest is almost NEVER best.
