the only thing I have a problem with is that they seem to sweeten everything with corn syrup...

just curious, what do they sweeten with in Canada and what do you find the difference in taste is? (I obviously don't read my labels here!)

Personally, everytime I shop in the big Asian supermarket here that has absolutely everything available, I wonder how much I will miss it when I leave. Of course, with IMBRA, I may yet have several more months ahead of me before I can happily miss it. :(

In the UK they use sugar - not corn syrup (tho thats creeping in) - CS is WAY sweeter than ordinary bog-standard sugar. Sometimes they use fructose here too; which is also a lot less sweet than corn syrup.

CS makes things taste way too cloying, covers the taste of the food so it's more muted - and also give you a LOT of extra sugar you don't need in your diet.

Canada uses regular corn syrup as well as other sugars, but in the US they use High Fructose Corn Syrup, (highly processed no longer resembling what it came from) which is about 10 times sweeter. Its in everything, and its gross and should be outlawed :P

I totally agree HFCS is just cheap and NASTY, and also dangerous if you need to keep your blood sugar down. Also its uneccessary in a lot of foods it gets added to (its like an afterthought - whack in some more sugary stuff and a bit of salt).

If you eat a lot of foods containing HFCS then 'real food' - the stuff you have to cut up and prepare - tastes bland. They put TONS of it in kids food - which IMO is just irresponsible (and is one reason so many kids won't eat unsweetened foods, gain weight fast and eat junk - because their palates are pretty well 'dead' )

I Miss CHEESE from home.

Cheese in America is very orangey in colour, and is soft compared to the cheese in Australia. I have tried all kinds of American cheese, but just dont enjoy it the way I love my cheese from home. My kids recently came to live with me, and they even said exactly the same thing, withoutme saying a word,... :( ...

Even the brands of cheese we have the same, like crackerbarrel, and such, still aren't the same,..

It's quite easy for me to adapt to different kinds of food.

Growing up, there were always two food choices:

1) Eat what's been put on the table

2) Don't eat what's been put on the table

Needless to say, I ain't particularly picky.

Same here, except that I am picky so I would NOT eat what was on the table all times. :P

I'm glad Puerto rican food is similar to brazilian food and we can adapt recipes easily. Luis likes my food and since I'll be cooking he's fine that he'll eat more brazilian style foods (almost no change, really) but there's a couple of things he eats that I'm not used to making in Brasil so I'll just learn those and cook for him.

I found some really nice English cheddar cheese at CostCo, called Coastal. They also have some British stiltons there and some other European cheese.

Failing that, Tillamook's special reserve cheddar's not bad.

You can get mexican mangoes in most groceries ( krogers etc0 now and also durian in oriental groceries.

I miss something called custard apples .

I love smoked and aged Gouda cheese. MMMM

I really used to pine for decent british wholemeal bread that isn't sickly sweet. Why oh why does virtually every foodstuff here have to have tons of sugar or syrup added??? Anyway, I did go to Wholefoods a few times and spent a fortune there. However, a while ago I discovered that our local (and other branches of) Albertsons started to offer a few bakery style breads at their bakery counter. They're uncut loaves and nearly european! We often get a Wheat French loaf because it's not too sweet, it's quite cheap and there might be a bit of roughage in there somewhere too, but mostly because they sell hot at around 4pm every day - I do LOVE hot fresh bread! :P

All the best,

I've gained 15 pounds since I moved back from Italy a year ago. American food is so bad!

Everybody said, "You're moving to Italy? I bet you'll gain lots of weight!". Instead, I lost it (but only to gain it back again in America). :(

Tex'n'Brit, I've found that the loaves that are referred to as "french bread" is closer to bread in the UK, especially as you said, when it's fresh from the bakery. :)

I miss liquorice, which is the only sweet thing I still eat these days. I have to stay away from HFCS, which makes life in the US difficult and shopping a lengthy and annoying endeavor, but I'm getting used to making my own bread again, carrying my own drinks, and so on.

We had to eat everything too when I was growing up, but the foods served to us weren't full of sugar, preservatives, and other detrimental ingredients, so I'm a picky eater by necessity in the US whereas in Germany I eat whatever is served to me.

What I miss are weird meats, such as duck, goose, rabbit, boar, deer, and so on. I should probably pick up hunting, but I prefer just buying those meats from a local butcher. I also miss certain cuts of meat. Finally, I love leeks or kohlrabi, but they are too much of a delicacy in the US (no idea why), so I can't eat them as often as I'd like.

Btw, Trader Joe's has a good and inexpensive selection of cheeses and some decent breads.
