I don't eat it but know that both in Colorado and texas - horse meat is indeed available - you may have to call a few butchers to find out who carries it. There was a segment on the local news here a few months back and they talked about it. Good luck

Hi Alma,

I am from Singapore and miss Asian food very badly sometimes, especially chicken curry. Thankfully, there are a few Asian stores not far from where we live and there is a Singapore website for my favorite brand of spices. I ordered a full box of different spices last week and they were delivered vial DHL 3 days later. :D:thumbs:

My husband and I do not eat fast food often. Maybe once or twice in two weeks. I try to cook often coz it is cheaper. :)

in some states, slaughtering horses for human consuption is against the law, believe it or not. They're "companion animals" or some such, ergo, not food. I would guess then that cat and dog are also illegal to serve to humans in those states.

From this article, I would guess the only states you can find horse meat are Texas and Illinois:

Horse meat still on US menu

07/02/2006 21:13 - (SA)

Washington - Horse slaughter for meat will continue in the United States, despite votes in congress to halt the practice, the agriculture department announced on Tuesday.

American horse meat is sold mostly for human consumption in Europe and Asia, although some goes to US zoos.

Congress didn't ban horse slaughter outright.

Instead, lawmakers used a tactic that is common in spending legislation.

Horses must pass inspection by department veterinarians before they are slaughtered, so lawmakers voted to yank the salaries and expenses of those inspectors.

Department officials maintain the law requires inspections regardless.

They announced on Tuesday they would pay for live horse inspections by charging fees to slaughter plants.

John Sweeney denounced the decision, saying that "commerce and greed have ruled the day".

"To end this practice, congress, with widespread public support, passed this amendment by a landslide vote in both the house and the senate.

This action is a direct defiance of congressional intent," said Sweeney

The department acted on requests from slaughter plants, two in Texas and one in Illinois, which said their communities could be facing $41m in losses.

Compared to the huge beef, pork and poultry industries, horse meat is a tiny business: Three plants slaughtered about 58 736 horses for meat in 2004, according to the department.

It's quite easy for me to adapt to different kinds of food.

Growing up, there were always two food choices:

1) Eat what's been put on the table

2) Don't eat what's been put on the table

Needless to say, I ain't particularly picky.

we had those same choices

nowadays kids are catered to.... moms sometimes cook a different meal for each kid .... just crazy

anywho, I am not terribly picky about food but coming from Canada there are not really a whole lot of differences in American food... the only thing I have a problem with is that they seem to sweeten everything with corn syrup... even my beloved Heinz Ketchup :crying: .... I bought a big tin of Canadian Heinz Ketchup on my last trip to Canada...

Heinz sells an "organic" ketchup here in the US that doesn't have the HFCS in it (made in Canada coincidently ;) ) and Del Monte ketchup doesn't have HFCS in it either, and its a bit easier to find. At least where I live.

theres not too much i miss.. but ketchup chips and poutine.. i miss those! some of the food here tastes abit different. I miss good seafood! but i am sure its the fact that i do not live anywhere remotely close to an ocean anymore! the beef here, i havent found to be too bad though, just the seafood.

Fastfood- the thought of it makes me sick. once inawhile i'l grab a salad from a fastfood joint. I worked at a fastfood joint for a month when i first got my employment authorization card.. that was discusting.

fastfood make me sick too, here in US people eat a lots of fast, fatty foods, chips, canned food, frozen stuff,etc..

i really miss good food: good bread, seafood, natural meat(not processed),good cheese, natural food without any artificial flavors or preservatives

many things taste very salty or very sweetened, but not NATURAL

Have you tried buying organic?

I don't know WHERE in the US you are - I know some states are limited for choices (my ex is a veggie and trying to get good veggie food in some states is like admitting you are a murderer)

If you have a Kazakhstan group or can find one on the Net near you I'm sure they can point you in the direction of foods more to your taste.

Organic is totally the way to go if you can afford it. Otherwise, you can buy decent vegetable and sometimes even meats at the local farmers' market.

Horse meat will be difficult to find because many Americans have ethical issues with slaughtering horses. But if you can find an Eastern European butcher, you might be lucky.
