There is also no option for "I'd rather have another cat, instead."

That's what I'm saying...

So, Magz, can my cats join your club?

The VJ Kitty Posse isn't my club; I don't know who started it but Sister Fracas, Jenn!, Kathryn and Mephys all had it in their siggy long before me! I think anyone is free to join. :D

I can't believe you guys :bonk: you can't just not have kids just because they're expensive. What about things that money can't buy that kids provide, like unconditional love, suffering, annoyance, disrespect?

The VJ Kitty Posse is open to all members who not only believe in, but also encourage the use of kitty pix to defuse any and all popcorn threads. :luv: We run in parallel with the "Lolly Pops and Blowing Sunshine up Your Bum" Club. Some members may be in both groups, but only a Venn Diagram could confirm this.

Would anyone like a parakeet and 2 gerbils?

I can't get another cat (or baby) until those are gone.

I can't believe you guys :bonk: you can't just not have kids just because they're expensive. What about things that money can't buy that kids provide, like unconditional love, suffering, annoyance, disrespect?

I'm sure if money weren't an issue at all, everyone here would probably want to have a couple of kids (or more, perhaps). The main problem is children are expensive. Excluding all the necessary expenses, like food and clothing, they're going to want toys (more likely video games today) and need supplies for school. Then there's healthcare. Let's not forget about college, which is costing more and more each year.

I'm sure I've forgotten quite a bit of stuff, but the point is that children cost a lot and you can't "return" or "exchange" the kid. Once you have a child, you're stuck with him or her -- unless you decide to give the kid up for adoption, but that's emotionally difficult and it can only be done when the child is a baby.

One other non-money issue to contend with here is that from what I gather, a good portion of the women on VJ are on their second marriage (maybe even third), so perhaps they already have kids and don't want any more. If they don't have children, perhaps these women are already in their mid-to-late 30s (or beyond), in which case the chances of birth defects, diseases and abnormalities tend to increase dramatically.

On the other hand... maybe some people just dislike kids and don't want them for that reason alone. Maybe they feel the twerps will "tie them down" or whatever. Who knows? I'm not a mind reader. I'm just tossing out ideas. ;)

That was fun to read. It was like, you started with a thesis, and then slowly proved yourself wrong by the end. :)

But seriously, money isn't a factor in my not wanting kids. I just don't want them. Maybe someday I will, and as long as I'm not on welfare I'll probably have one then, god willing.

 I've noticed that too. I completely agree with people not wanting kids for reasons like they don't want to be a parent, they enjoy their lifestyle and kids would change that or they just dislike kids, but those people denying themselves to have a child just because it'll be financially difficult is not a good reason IMO.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. :star:

However, I don't think I "proved" myself wrong at all. I wasn't even attempting to "prove" anything. As I said before, I was just throwing ideas out. Some people may not want kids simply because they just don't want them and no other reason (like yourself) and others may not wish to have them due to a financial or biological situation.

There could be some overlap too. Whatever the case, it's a personal decision. I think it's a bit rude to say that anyone's choice to have or not to have children is "right or wrong." It's their life. Let them live it.
