Fortunately I had no problems with my wife since she is very fluent in english and she writes english very well too, better than me. In fact when I do my reports now, I let her read and she changes a number of my words which make my reports better. She didnt insist that I learn her language since all her family members back in the Philippines speaks english very well.

Me and hubby speak in English to each other primarily but I've been learning patwah more and more. I can understand it usually and speak it...probbly on the level of a 4 or 5 year old. He wants me to learn it so when he gets here we can speak to each other in it and teach our kids. Its much easier to learn a language when you have to be immersed in it all day or when you read it alot.

I learned it probably in every way imaginable. After 7 years, it is still not perfect in every way, but I can function in general. I think the hardest part of the process was when I actually moved to Germany and then was directly confronted with the monster that is not taught from the book. It was a steep learning curve.

My husband speaks English very well, but he is the exception rather than the rule in his family. If I wish to communicate with my in-laws, I have to speak German.

As it is now, my husband speaks to me in German probably 50-60% of the time. Sometimes, we have these conversations where he speaks in German and I in English at the same time when we are both feeling lazy.

It is still a learning process and I doubt it ever won't be.

hahaha, we do that too. My husband will talk to me in Portuguese and I'll respond in English - then sometimes hearing it he'll respond back (which is good since he needs to practice).

We have a deal at the moment that when he visits me we speak English and when I am over there I will attempt American English - although I don't want to turn completely 'native' - my friends and family in the UK wouldn't forgive me!

On my last visit to the US a shop assistant asked me what language we speak in England!!!!!

did you reply englandish?

I'd never give up on a british accent, which is way hotter than the american accent.

My wife speakes excellent english (although, she'll argue with anyone and tell them it's Awwwwfullll) I've been learning Spanish since we've met and I'm getting better every day, I had 14 years of French, 2yrs of formal Spanish and a year of Chinese, so I think that that helps. I tell her that I speak Spanglish very well, often starting or ending sentences in Spanish. My problem is I need more practice (heading to Spain next week  ) so we practice every dinner time while we cook and eat together. It's tough though sometimes, especially at the end of a day when we're both tired....

All done for the next 10 years...

Like all good (?) little Swedes I studied English in school, from 3rd grade and up.

Hubby is still learning, he speaks his own SwEnglish mix with our bi-lingual kids and picks up more from them than from me =D

His first self composed Swedish phrase was "spökhästen äter bebisen" (The ghost horse eats the baby...) and he was very proud of it.

We communicate mainly in English with a few essential Swedish words and phrases thrown in.

Recently an elderly family friend asked us to type up some papers he had written into the computer since he isn't familiar with computers. So I said I'd do the typing since I assumed I'd be faster than Sujeet typing my own language. I got bored soon and took a break, and Sujeet said he'd do some. I thought, "ok but this will take forever..." haha. Turns out he did it twice as fast as me and had hardly any spelling errors. I was impressed!! And a little jealous. :P

my SO and i communicate in italian, but we are both learning eachother's native languages...i learned A LOT of italian from him though...i studied it growing up (from age 13 all the way through college), but when i first arrived in italy (the same time that i met him), i still couldnt hold a conversation...i remember our first conversations and how ridiculous they were since i barely spoke italian...i learned a lot from him and now i can speak at a conversational level (certainly not fluent though)...

were both making an effort to learn eachother's languages, and we kinda mesh all three languages together right now, speaking mostly italian, with english and albanian thrown in...keeps things interesting, and also helps us learn, we will try to use the new vocab as often as possible...im going to albania on saturday and i am going to be lost!!!!! i only know the important key phrases :(
