Are we sure that this means that a new receipt will be issued to everyone that filed before June 2018? Has anyone called or confirmed this with USCIS?

Even though they are extending it to 18months, the California Center time frame says 18 months to 20 months waiting period .....so ridiculous.

Also - anyone know if our application stays at the California Center or does it get sent to the local field offices? If so, when does that happen?

If we are to take the USCIS press release at face value, all those who still had pending cases as of June 2018 should automatically receive an updated I-797:

[...] Additionally, we will issue new Form I-797 receipt notices to eligible conditional permanent residents whose Form I-751 or I-829 was still pending as of June 11, 2018.

Not me, and I don't know anyone e else who has either. My husband still has 5 mos on his current extension letter. Ideally we'll get the letter before then and avoid an infopass appointment!

I have my letter, does this mean I get a new one?  With this letter I was allowed to renew my driving license for a year - so I have to pay again to renew for 6 months when the "new" letter expires

You only got a year? I got mine approved for at least 5 years. But yes, if you only got one year extra you can go to the DMV and get some more time on it.

Sorry this may be already answered - trying to get my head around this. Is USCIS saying any pending I-797s before june 2018 are automatically valid for 18months? my Extension period runs out on aug 22nd. Does this mean i now have an additional 6 months?? Without the need to get an info pass (which is never available)?

Do not take my interpretation as fact, but if this USCIS press release is to be taken at face value, I do not believe your current I-797 receipt is automatically extended for an additional 6 months. It appears as though USCIS is going to be sending out new notices:

Quote

Additionally, we will issue new Form I-797 receipt notices to eligible conditional permanent residents whose Form I-751 or I-829 was still pending as of June 11, 2018. Those Form I-797 receipt notices will also serve as evidence of continued status for 18 months past the expiration date on petitioner’s Permanent Resident Card.

If you are cutting it close to your extension cut-off date, I would highly recommend trying to call USCIS to see if speaking to a live person can yield a local office appointment; trust me, I have been keeping my eyes peeled on my local one and not a single appointment has been available for months now online. Highly insulting that it comes down to pure chance/luck in getting an I-551 stamp appointment, really. I have heard of some people even travelling out of state to a less busy USCIS office for the stamp, if you can believe it.

And there are now frequent protests in front of the local USCIS office here (same building as ICE). Makes an infopass appointment that much more enjoyable! /sarcasm

Just wondering: has anyone heard of anyone receiving a new, 18-month extension letter, besides those who filed right around May/June 2018? I haven't seen any examples of people filing way back in 2017 getting a new letter, unless I'm missing something.

I filed in May 2017 and received a 12-month extension letter valid until... well, tomorrow! That news release a couple of months back got my hopes up that I'd be receiving a new extension letter, meaning I wouldn't have to get an infopass appointment. But I guess I was wrong.

I believe the 18 month extension letters are a rarity for folks who already had filed the petition. You should go get stamp for sure.

My wife got her extension letter yesterday. January 2017 filer, GC expiration in March 2017, meaning this "extension" really only adds a month. Fortunately we got her passport/visa stamped before the end of the original 1-year letter, so she'll be good into 2019. Kinda pointless to sent 18-month extensions to people who have been waiting for 18 months...

That's what I'd gathered. Shame.

Out of curiosity, do I absolutely need to get a stamp, even if I don't have plans to travel any time soon? Or is it just recommended so that I have proof of status? I'll probably still go get one, for this reason, but the idea of handing over my green card (albeit an expired one) in exchange for a stamp still makes me very nervous! I was really hoping they'd come through with those 18 month letters 😏
