I've never spanked my child and she is very well behaved. IMO, spanking a child in response to undesired behavior sends the message that responding to the unwanted behavior with physical force is acceptable and appropriate. It isn't. I do not need to apply physical force to have my child follow my direction. A stern look is all it takes. She knows when dad is serious.

I spanked my kids, they turned out ok. My mother spanked me, I turned out ok. Depends on the parent. Some do, some don't.

My brothers kids are pretty much never spanked and it works great for them.. My 3 1/2 year old step son hs always been spanked though and Im not sure how he will respond to a change that seems like a downgrade to severity of punishment.

There are a lot of things we plan to institute when he gets here though, like time out, stars losing privileges or favorite toys for set time periods etc.

We are hoping the massive change to living in the USA from China and a new home, having a father etc will be major enough that we can make it seem like a game changing reset wherein all the rules can be changed too.

Currently his grandmother/caregiver doesn't maintain the same rules and repercussions his mother sets so it really undermines her attempts to get him to tow the line and do what he's supposed to.. He isn't a bad kid but its hard to lay down hard rules. So we figure it will be a rough transition but with both of us doing all the same things and the grandmother not here to break with the set rules, we can make it work.

I don't have any kids, doubt I ever will, but I'd reply with "No". I was raised that way and, while I turned out alright (I suppose), I don't think it did me any good. I always valued communication and reason far above "because I said so". Growing up is a learning process.
