Hi,

My fiancé and i are just about to send in our paperwork for the K1 visa. I have been reading this site for months and know that its very hard to pinpoint a time the visa could take.

I would like to go back to school and study for 10 months before leaving for the usa, would this be a smart idea? or are most K1 visas taking 1 year to be approved?

any advice would be great

My I-129F was approved in 38 days without RFE. Total amount of times was 143 days until got visa in hands since my then-fiancé ( my now husband) and I decided to delay due our work commitments. Total amount of times are vary depend where the beneficiary comes from after I-129F approval.

Also, there is unbalance petitions approval between Texas Service Center and California Service Center. If your petition goes to TSC, expect would take up to 6 months to be process whereas CSC is pretty fast for last a few months. Mine was processed at TSC and they were quite fast back then to approve I-129F.

It really depends on your situation, country, etc. Our whole process has taken 75 days from the day we posted our application to the interview. Im assuming we ad another 14/30 days for the visa in hand. It was quick for us! As the other poster mentioned. Tsc is very slow and csc is very fast. That being said, there are still people who applied around the same time as I did waiting for there NOA2. I guess its all down to luck!

Here is the deal, once the petition has been approved by USCIS and forwarded to the embassy, the embassy will automatically extend the petition validity for up to a year.... so you should be fine to complete your schooling.

It definitely depends on several variables. Ours was Feb 1st (mailed in our petition) to June 13th (visa in hand). We went through the CSC (specific states go to either TSC or CSC) and the Irish embassy, which has no back up at all, and is very efficient with getting visas out to the beneficiary once they're approved. When we began this process, we were hoping he'd be here by Thanksgiving. He'll be here before the end of July. :)

Edit to add: My advice would be yes, go to school. With the 6-month timeframe to use the visa, plus the ability of the embassy to extend your petition expiration date, you will have plenty of time to finish that up before you relocate. :)

The processing times depend on which service center your case will be processed at (TSC or CSC) and how fast they approve cases by the time you are filing, if you receive any RFE's, how fast you get through the NVC, and how long it takes the local embassy to schedule an interview appointment for you. The whole process may be quick and painless (3-4 months), or it may take longer (up to 12 months). There are just so many factors involved. My K1 took 9 months, but that was 2 years ago.

I suggest you go back to school and learn as much as you can. It may help you later here in the US. As others have pointed out, you have six months to get to the US once your visa has been approved.

You have time and school is surely much cheaper there than it is in the US!! Get your schooling and give yourself that advantage for when you arrive in the US. We filed in February 2013 and he got his visa in December with 1 RFE. As others have said, it depends on the country and the processing center but it would definitely be to your advantage to complete more schooling before you come.

Good luck!

It seems that the time frame is completely dependent on many random factors. We filed on 19 May 2014 and were sent to CSC and were approved in 14 days. I have just received our case # from NVC this morning so our file will be sent to Buenos Aires at any moment now!

I would recommend filing now just in case you do end up at TSC (not sure which state you are in?) as Texas seems to be taking quite some time. School is important so if you have the opportunity and the desire to do it now, go for it! :)

There are more variables that affect the time than you could imagine. Most of them you are not in control of. One of the few you do control is proper preparation.

So how long? Maybe 4 months. Maybe 3 years. Probably 8 months to 1 year, but that is only probably.

Mine was filed beginning of march 2014 and I have had my interview waiting for visa delivery hope to be back in the USA with my fiancé next week so mine total will have taken about 3.5 months but mine was quick it really does vary with cases, what country you live in, what service centre is used in the states to process your application as some can be faster than others and also how busy they are with cases at your time of filing. There are so many variables that determine how fast your case is processed.
