I don't agree with Trump nor on many of his policies but I do agree on this... why should some people take short cuts while us legal immigrants have to pay $$$.

I have tried to explain to people what needs to happen in order to stay here legally for people who are Anti-Trump and you could literally see their eyes start to gloss over when I told them what people needed to do. It was like they liked the fact that anything Trump did immigration wise was bad but didn't care to actually learn about the immigration process.

I work with really smart people, but they know very little about immigration. They think since I've been living in the US for more than 10 years, I'm automatically a citizen. If not that, then marrying a citizen made me a citizen, right? If not my husband, then my son was born in the US, so I must be a citizen now, right?
Then I explain that no, that's not how it works and they assume I mean for me, in my situation. Because in general, in their mind, that's how it works.

We already see this with expedition requests based on "illnesses" and "financial burden"

I'm not a Trump or Hillary voter but for the first time ever we'll get a refund of $150 instead of owing $450! My husband is self-employed. He also receives gas royalty checks (majority of our income). I'm a stay-at-home mom. We have 3 kids & my MIL whom we support financially. We claimed all 4 of them as dependents. We had subsidised Trumpcare/Obamacare plans. My MIL paid $35/month in premiums, we paid $30/month for both of us. It's good insurance. We'll lose in November when my MIL will turn 65 and she will go on Medicare. Kids are on Medicaid. We live in TX. AGI about $40k. (MIL gets less than $1000/month in Social Security.)
According to my husband we are "poor", not middle class. I think we are lower middle class...

You are confusing nonresidents of STATES with permanent residents. I read a few of those statutes you linked and they refer to land, business, and homeowners who are not residents of the state they want to vote in.

The law still stands that noncitizens can not vote.

You really have to be careful with this type of information because an error like voting in elections can have dire consequences.

Edited to add: There may be some local municipal elections where noncitizens are allowed to participate in. I still have not seen anything allowing noncitizens to vote in State elections. But I always advise to err on the side of caution. Be very diligent in your research.

This thread should be a mandatory read for anyone wanting to bring their elderly  parents here to live.  Most people coming here on a k1 or spouse visa will be able to be added on to their spouse"s insurance or get coverage thru their employer once they are working. However I feel like people don't give this enough consideration when bringing parents here who will be unable to work.  Too often they say they are not worried about health insurance because they make plenty of money to pay  for their parents care.    I don't think they understand how unrealistic that is.

I can totally relate to this...I'm the USC and my husband is from a big, world class city (pop. 6+ million)...now we live in a city that has about pop. 2 million and my husband is extremely frustrated with not having the same options he had in a large city: lack of reliable public transit, the fact that driving was always a choice and not a obligation, lack of cultural events and places...not to mention leaving behind his wonderful family. I actually used to live abroad with him in his home city and we both loved it here but had to leave for opportunity reasons due to my husband's circumstances (Russia has issues right now, heh.) Thankfully, we are considering moving on from here to a bigger city once we finish up our own business in this town, but we're still stuck here for 1+ more year...then we're looking into more international big cities here in the US.

It sounds like the main reason your husband wants to stay is to be near his family. That is understandable but on the other hand, you are his family too and your happiness matters. Plus, you left your family and home country behind...that's a big sacrifice. I hope your husband can see if from your perspective and you can both work through it. Everyone else has given great advice so far...you're definitely not alone in feeling homesick or culture shock, it's extremely common with international couples...especially if it is a move from a big international city to a mid-sized or small American town. Hugs!

You should never be able to AOS off of a tourist visa.

Of course they should be. If you overstay you ought to be denied immigration benefits for a time or permanently. If you cannot follow immigration laws, then odds are you won't follow other laws either.

ALL illegal aliens are criminals and ALL of them ought to be deported, no matter what.

The next crackdown should be on bogus asylum claims. Gang violence, your husband beating you, or just "wanting a better life" are NOT grounds for either asylum or immigration but I digress.

I absolutely support president Trump's agenda and will vote for whoever will continue it in 2024 after I'm Naturalized.

That is true in the short term. But we are now taxpayers with good US incomes as adults. Check out the second video I linked; it repeatedly makes the point that it benefits taxpayers in the long term.
That is the way of life. Immigration is a priviledge not a right.

    1) he became a US LPR when he activated his visa. At that point in time he was no longer a Canadian resident.
    2) im not exactly sure how the rrsps etc work because I didnt have them, sorry. Others who have will hopefully chime in.
    3) as I noted when he activated his visa he became an LPR so he was no longer eligible for Alberta health care. It would be good to pay for private insurance in Canada to cover any emergencies while he is up there working.
    4) on here we tend to recommend serbinski forums for tax help. They are also a cross border accounting agency. I did my own taxes the year I moved but I also quit my job so it had a clean split compared to your situation.

Have you considered her finishing the immigration process, come over for the summer to activate her green card, and file for a Re-Entry Permit so she can be outside the US for up to 2 years without losing her green card?
