newlyweds2010 got a reaction from pddp in buying a house as a conditional resident
I agree, someplace where they don't make houses of wood and cardboard and still sell them for a fortune. But he lives here and he is free to buy where he likes.

Quite frankly, I would be surprised if his parents agreed to graciously donate the money and have the house under both spouses' names. It is not a matter of disregarding the relationship, it is just a matter of protecting their assets. I assume they did not win the money at the national lottery, and that earning that money cost them time and effort. To the OP: you are free to tell them 'no thank you'. I suspect that in that case they will not give him any money to buy any house. To those who say that without her he would not have had the "great privilege of buying a house in America (really? Will all those property taxes you call it a privilege?!): foreigners make real estate investments in the US all the time, without being residents or without living here. Plus, he could have bought a nice house someplace else.

I really do not see the problem. As a couple, you are entitled to deal with your assets and finances as you deem fit for yourselves. People come from various cultures and deal with money differently. Some jointly own everything. Some have separate accounts. Its very individual

Um, apparently it's his parents' money that's giving her "the luxury" of owning a home in America, so without him, there's no house...

If his parents afford that, I am sure he could have bought a much nicer house wherever he is from. Not everyone is from Africa or the poor parts of Asia, you know, some of us had quite nice lives back home.

If the house is mostly paid by his parents, then I find it normal for it to be in his name. In case of a divorce, why should someone who has not contributed much to a very large purchase walk away with half of it?

newlyweds2010 got a reaction from Teddy B in Cashing Canadian Bank Checks In The US
Lol, I have a future as a bank manager (no thank you!). I assume the Canadian bank does not charge because the account holder in Canada already pays some other periodic fees/commissions which include this service. Do not assume that they are doing this for free, they are not (this is probably also verbatim your bank manager). On the other hand, do not call the Canadian bank to complain as to why they did not withhold a commission: if you do they might, just to make their customer happy...

I have no experience with Canadian banks, but it works exactly the same way with Italian banks. You pay a commission to the US bank where you cash the check, and you may also have to pay an additional commission to the foreign bank issuing the check. Fair? Absolutely not, IMHO. But it is what it is.

I haven't received it yet, it's been 3 weeks since I was approved. They said it would come within 60 days, I guess we will just have to wait.

What other steps? I assume you removed the conditions back in 2011 and received a 10-year card on or about May 27th of that year. This means you are done until 2021, unless you want to file for citizenship.

you mean a foreign passport? How could they (they who? the USCIS?) take it away, it's not theirs. a Canadian passport is property of Canada (and being Canada a Dominion of the United Kingdom, that very passport belongs to Her Majesty).
Also, they will not request you to renounce any citizenship. It may be your country of origin that does not allow dual citizenship. The US allows it. So does Canada. No stress.

You misunderstand. It can be sent any time in the 90 days preceding the GC expiration. If you send it one day too early, they will return it to you. I would just wait to send it in June to be safe. It's no problem.

your first greencard has a date on it on or around 2010-07-15 -
so if you are eligible , why not file for USCitizenship in the 90 day window prior to 2013-07-15 ??

I think you have to look at it the other way around: you do not have to prove to them that the money comes from a job. You know it does, and you can track it to the penny. One thing you could do is to print out the online bank statements and take them to an accountant (a real one).

If he did something dumb, that was smoking weed 4 years ago, or whenever he did that. Certainly not telling the truth when he was supposed to. I am somehow astonished by the fact that many people here are advocating lies and criticize this guy for telling the truth.

i say call back 10 times, once a day, for the next two weeks, asking the same question, and record the answers.
Then take any answer over 40 percent.
    Good Luck !

I'm not trying to be rough on you but this is a serious matter and I always tell people that Immigration DOES NOT play. Don't say that you were lazy to open a joint account. It shows them that you both don't trust each other or it's not a real relationship (Sorry, with all due respect ) Always think of going once before these guys because they are looking for every little detail to deny you. So let keep our fingers cross. Good Luck! And it's not too late to open a joint account if in case they're watching you.

I'm sorry, but I cannot agree with you. Marijuana is illegal in many countries, including Jamaica where the OP's spouse is from, and not since yesterday. The 1-year ban for weed smokers has been in place for quite some time, and from what I understand it used to be harsher in the past. You play by the rules, you win by the rules. No matter how unfair they may seem to you.
