Austen's books only covered a small strata of society, what may be called the 1% in current terminology. Actually very few were in desperate circumstances relative to the general population.
I just find it interesting that despite the best attempts some innate factors do not change, so there is an inevitable clash.
Obviously the discussion here is about the norm, I would never suggest it applies to everyone, very little does.

I am more interested in the well I was going to call them side effects but maybe they will be seen as major effects in the future. There are always consequences and this is unchartered territory, how those consequences will pan out, there have been surprises, more to come.
