  1. Yesterday I had my interview and exam.

I will refrain from expressing my subjective opinion and will write fact based.

I arrived 25min early and waited for my name to be called. There were numerous people who came and went during my wait. My appointment was late by 1hr35min. I saw people come out of the interview rooms anywhere from 10min to 25min. One interviewer seemed to take longer, which is the one that I got. The person before me had an interview of an hour.

My name was called. The language/civics was to be as expected. My civic questions were verbal. Study the guide that you can find online and you will be fine. The interview was not easy or cut and dry. It was a stressful, lengthy and tiring process. The only personal opinion I will give is that I felt like a criminal being interrogated. The officer was pointed, diligent and detailed oriented. All very good traits.

I did not know that I was successful in the process until the officer asked if I wanted to attend a swearing in ceremony the same day. I agreed, but due to technical scheduling difficulties all same day ceremonies were cancelled for that day. But it does seems that it is common place to have same day ceremonies at this location.

This morning I received a swearing in ceremony notice for mid February 2024, after checking my online account.

  2. And coincidentally, I received a non-residency approval today in the mail, dated 11 Jan, based on acceptable nr73 application. So this process is now complete. It appears from start to finish, just shy of a month to complete. Lightning fast.

  3. Update: have not heard anything back after mailing in the questionnaire. Strangely, wife and I received cra email notifications indicating that our addresses were changed to US ones on the cra system.
    perhaps a sign of processing......

To refresh my memory, what are the Canadian form we need to fill out and send once we have crosses the border to let them know we left the country and that we are not permanent resident of Canada anymore?

You can either merely reflect that you have left on your next tax return.

Although not a requirement, fill out the NR73. Nr73 decision paperwork from CRA is usually required by financial institutions in order to release full lump sum LIRA’s etc.

  5. An NR73 is required by the CRA to determine residency/non-residency in Canada for tax purposes.

of course it is not a requirement for everyone leaving Canada to fill out and await a decision, but it is needed by those who have pensions or LIRA’s in Canada and want them cashed out in full. Financial institutions require this approval letter from the CRA in order to release all the funds to those former Canadian residents who now reside in the US. (Side note: 25% tax on the full payout).

with that out of the way, I am asking for feedback from those going through the NR73 process or who have gone through it, as to the length of time it took for CRA to supply a letter of non-residence decision.

    thanking you in advance.

    I got my green card in the mail today! One month and 4 days after crossing the border. So happy and So grateful this visa journey is over :) All the best to those still waiting! Here's hoping for the best. Don't give up and don't loose hope! YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS!!! {BIG HUGS}

How long did it take for social security card to show up?

The link to the cra website is now gone or edited where they explain that one qualifies for EI when emigrating.
is this still a feasible option for us who emigrate to the US?

Google was my friend. Looks like still active.

QUESTION: does my resignation letter need to state the reason for quitting? (Accompany spouse to another country etc) or is this verbally stated to HR so that they can create a correct “record of employment” code in order to qualify for EI?

From the Canada-departure department, are folks remembering to submit NR-73 to the CRA?

    This is good reminder.

Does anyone know how long the processing time is for the NR73 these days? (about 2 yrs ago it was 6 months). I heard from an accountant that it is way longer now.

side note: nr73 is needed to release all funds in pension plans or LIRA's.

  9. my data points: no change in status on CEAC portal after my interview, which was Monday. It remained as "ready". The first change was "Issued - undergoing admin processing" about 30hrs after the interview, which was yesterday, Tuesday.. It changed to "issued-final processing" today, Wednesday, 24hrs later. Shortly thereafter I received EMAIL notification of tracking number label being created including the tracking number. So from interview to tracking number was approximately: 54hrs.

edit: purolator estimated delivery date is Thursday, Nov 5
