Yes thats all she asked. Only 2 questions. But in the beginning she just ask the questions on the form i-751 and checked it. It took less than 10 mins.

That is not the case for me.  Only N-400 interview, no I-751 and IO officer did not ask any new documents and did not say anything about I-751, when  I mentioned about no  I-751 approval yet,  he said  that he was aware of it.  So passed N-400, but no decision.  However, each case is different and also each IO officer is different.  Best of luck with you upcoming interview and make sure to update your outcome

I can tell you from my wife's experience, she had a similar situation.  About a month after the N400 Passed/No Decision/Pending I751 situation, she received the NOA approving her I751, and about a week or two after that her oath was scheduled.

Here is a thread that deals with N400s with a pending I751 which may have more current information.

    Good Luck!

    Thought I'd my experience here.

    - Filed ROC in July 2016 and there wasn't a single change in the case status outside of acceptance.
    - One year had passed and I became eligible for N-400, so filed that in July 2017
    - Got passport stamp to extend status
    - Case in line for interview in August 2017 for N-400
    - May 2018, got notification on my ROC that the case was moved to a different office for processing
    - June 2018, got an interview scheduled notice for my N-400 for July 25th.
    - Did a case inquiry for my ROC in January of 2018 and got a letter 7 months later on July 14, 2018 saying that they know I have a N-400 interview soon and that my ROC will likely be processed at the same time.
    - July 25th, show up for interview and they call my name and the first thing they ask me is if my spouse came along
    - They had interview with the spouse and myself for the ROC, then escorted my spouse out.
    - They continued the N-400 interview by myself.
    - Once we went through the application, finished the three tests, they said  my application was approved and that I should get an oath ceremony notice.

Here is an example. Write a few paragraphs, one or two pages total:
    - Pupose of letter
    - How you met
    - How/why you got married
    - Relationship during marriage, things you did together
    - Why the relationship didn't work, why you decided to get divorced
    - Write the conclusion stating that the marriage was entered into in good faith, and that you support her removal of conditions.

FYI for anyone like me, going in to a N-400 interview with a pending ROC, I received this letter from my local USCIS office today. So from the looks of it, I think my I-751 is also at my local office and I will hopefully have them both decided on the same day.

Well, honestly, I am not completely certain if it ever was actually sent to NBC in Missouri.  My wife had her N400 interview in Detroit on April 10th, the IO asked me to come back and conducted a joint I751 interview with the both of us and she clearly had the I751 package in front of her.  Then I left and my wife proceeded with the N400 interview.  A day or two later we received the NOA saying the I751 was transferred to the NBC in Missouri (the N400 was recommended for approval at the interview and subsequently approved awaiting for an oath to be scheduled).  A month later the I751 was approved, but I am not sure if it actually went to NBC or if the Detroit office processed it.  Doesn't really matter though as the oath has been scheduled and the end if the immigration journey is near.

My wife had the combined N-400 and i-751 interview today. We arrived at 7:45 for 8 am interview, but weren't called in until about 9:20AM. I went in with her, and the officer said there will be two of them with one there just for observation. They had both the files with them.

The second officer started with the i-751 interview and checked her birth certificate and our marriage certificate in addition to the green card/passport etc. She told us that she'll ask questions and if she directs them to one of us, the other person should not respond. Here are some questions she asked -
(To me, the petitioner): Wife's full name and maiden name and the date and place of birth (To wife): My full name and date of birth (To wife) When and where did we meet? (We met in India while I was visiting family) (To wife) What happened after that? (To me) Was I on a vacation? Was I already a US citizen at that point, and why did I go there How did we keep in touch after I came back to the US? How often did we see each other between the first time and until she immigrated to the US Details of each trip (To wife) When did we meet on my second trip - wife replied it was right before we were getting married, we went to buy our rings (To me) What does my wife's ring look like - and then she asked my wife to show the ring to her How come we got married so quickly (about 6 weeks from us meeting to me proposing her, and then the wedding was about 1.5 months after that) (To wife) How many people were at the wedding? (To us) Why are there no pictures in our file (We submitted a lot of pics with our i-751, but they were almost all following her immigration since we didn't think marriage pics would be necessary anymore) - wife offered to show the pics on her phone, she said she'll check them later (To wife) How many days were the wedding events (since Indian weddings have many events over a few days) (To me) What is our address, phone number Have we ever lived at any other address?  (To me) Why did I wait two years to put my wife on the home deed? - I said just getting a trust company to do the paperwork took time. She said it wasn't a good excuse. I explained that California being a community property state, I didn't think it mattered that much. NOTE: we had submitted home deed transfer copy with i-751 docs, so they were prepared to ask this question beforehand. Asked if we had traveled since our i-751 application in 2018 and asked to see itineraries, which we had brought. Asked for our 2018 tax return.
The questions were quite intense but I think we answered everything satisfactorily. At this point, the officer conducting i-751 interview told me that they'll continue my wife's interview and move on to the naturalization interview and I didn't need to be present for that so she escorted me out, telling me it might take another 30-45 minutes.

My wife came out about 20 minutes after that. She was asked a couple more questions, such as if we both have personal bank account (in addition to the joint statements we submitted) and how is the joint bank account money spent. My wife showed pictures from our wedding events on her phone (Q13 above), specifically ones showing many guests. She also made copies of our bank joint account statement, travel itineraries in the last year, and took some other pics we had brought with us from recent trips. All this while the other officer was interviewing her for naturalization.

    Naturalization interview questions -

Name the US war between the North and the South What are the first 10 amendments called? Name of the speaker of the house Who makes federal laws What are the two major political parties Name of the president For the English test, she had to read "Who can vote" and write (on the tablet) "Citizens can vote".

She was approved for N-400 but it's pending i-751 approval. They didn't say anything about the status, just said they will send the update. If the i-751 petition is approved, she won't receive a new green card and instead will take the oath directly. Fingers crossed all went OK!

Hi everyone, I’ve just passed my N-400 and I-751 combo interview this Monday 02/10 at Dallas USCIS Field Office. I have been observing many of your previous experience regards the combo interview and they really helped me a lot for mine. Everything went pretty smooth. My interview was scheduled at 2:00pm. My husband and I arrived at 1:30pm, went thru the security check, then checked-in at the reception area where they took a picture of mine and got my finger-prints scanned. Then we went to upstairs and waited there until 2:15pm. The IO was a very nice lady. She called my name; my husband also stood up and came with me. The IO didn’t say a thing about him coming along with me. After we sat down, she quickly explained that she had to adjudicate my I-751 first, then she would move to the N-400 interview later. I-751 questions: How did you two meet? Did you exchange phone numbers / email addresses? What is your spouse’s b-day? What do you like most about your spouse? What is the least thing you like about your spouse? Where do you work? Where does your spouse work? Where did you live right after getting married? How far is it from Chicago & Iowa? What is your current address? Do you have any children? During the interview, we had some small talks about the Chicago Bear, about the winter time in the North as I told her I just stayed in IL for one winter and I decided I didn’t like the cold so we both moved to Dallas later on. So it was kind of a conversation which I think has helped us to show the IO about our marriage life. Also she did reviewed all the evidences that we submitted with the I-751 form and asked some questions regards random locations where we took the photos. At the end of the I-751 interview, the IO asked if we have any other evidences that we wanted to update. Since we only submitted the purchase contract of our new house at the time we filed I-751, in this interview I brought our mortgage papers and the property deed I printed out from my county’s website which showed both my husband and me as the owners of the house. I also gave her our joint tax forms of 2018 & 2019. I asked her if she needs to see more of our updated photos but she said no need. Civic questions: What is the name of the national anthem? We elect a U.S. Representative for how many years? In what month do we vote for President? What is the capital of the United States? The idea of self-government is in the first three words of the Constitution. What are these words? What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment? After completed with the civic questions, the IO then asked a list of yes/no questions as showed in the N-400. I had a speeding ticket after filling the N-400 so I also brought the receipt and the dismissal order from the court to show that I already paid the fines. I didn’t tell my husband about the ticket so when I told the IO that yes I had a speeding ticket, my husband was like “no, you didn’t have any ticket”, and I told him “Yes I did. I was afraid that you would be mad at me so I didn't tell you”. The IO was like “Ohhhh, so we have a little secret that has just been revealed now. But I am glad that she tells the truth”. She said a lot of people swear to tell the truth but they still hide things. The IO joked with me that I was in bad luck to get pulled over on I-75 as she saw a lot of people usually drive at that speed. She was fine with all the documents I brought in to show that I already paid for the ticket. I think thru this conversation, it also showed that we have a normal husband & wife life. So, I guess it is still fine if you have some differences between your answers, as long as the IO can see a bona fide marriage from how you interact with each other from day-to-day life. At the end, she confirmed with me once again about my name change (I requested a name change when I filed the N-400 form), updated my traffic ticket and that I paid all the fines, and also updated my latest trip back to Vietnam to visit my parents. Everything was showed on a tablet screen and I had to sign to confirm all of the changes were correct. Then she told me that she approved both of my I-751 and N-400 and gave me a paper which she checked on the box “Congratulations …...” and that she already put my name in queue for the Oath ceremony, so I would expect to receive the letter about the Oath in 4-6 weeks as they had to wait for a judge to do the ceremony (I guess because I requested for name change so it would take longer???) She also told me that I shall not receive the 10-year GC as I am going to be soon a US citizen, but I will still see on the USCIS website that my I-751 will be approved.   **** My I-751 & N-400 timeline: 6/30/2018 – I-751 application sent 7/01/2019 – N-400 application sent 7/04/2019– Biometric appointment for I-751 scheduled on 7/17/19 7/05/2018 – Biometric appointment for N-400 scheduled on 7/26/19 7/17/2019 – Combo biometric for I-751 & N-400 (I came in, showed the 2 letters to the guy at the reception and asked if I could do both today since the 2 appointments only 1 week apart. He said yes of course) 8/08/2019 – I-751 was transferred to another USCIS office. That office now has jurisdiction over your case (NBC Lee Summit, MO) 01/06/2020 – N-400 interview was scheduled 02/10/2020 – I-751 & N-400 combo interview 02/11/2020 - We placed you in line for Oath ceremony & no update on the I-751

    Hi,

I wanted to share my experience with what turned out to be a successful combo interview both for the I-751 and N-400 applications. I filed my ROC application in August 2018 and the N-400 in July 2019. Early in January 2020 I received an appointment letter for my naturalization interview while no action had been taken on the I-751 since my biometrics appointment back in 2018.

I attended my naturalization interview without knowing whether they would also deal with the I-751 and, following the insightful comments from this forum, I decided to bring my wife along, just in case. However, there was a notice before going through security at the USCIS building stating that companions were not allowed. Always willing to follow the rules, and since I had not received a specific notice to bring my wife to the interview, she didn't come in and went to grab a coffee nearby. Inside in the waiting area there were many applicants with their spouses. Oh, well.

When I got called in, the officer seem surprised when I showed her my green card extension letter and I explained that my I-751 was pending. She took my documents and left the room for around 10 minutes. It felt like one hour, though. She came back with another officer, although they stayed chatting outside of the office, and the senior officer asked whether I had brought my wife along. I jumped in and explained that she was not inside the building, but was nearby having a coffee, so I could ask her to join us if needed. After another 5 minutes, the initial officer came back and she said that my wife would not be needed, but that we would go through my I-751 first, just with me, then move on to the naturalization interview. Combo interview, yay!

Interestingly, my I-751 file was there. I guess I wasn't sure whether it would have been transferred at all before going in. I was a bit surprised that she hadn't noticed that given that she was surprised that my I-751 was pending, but she probably didn't check the file before calling me in.

The I-751 questions were few and quite generic, e.g., where did we meet, when did we marry, do we have children, where do we leave, etc. She said that everything seemed fine and then moved on to the naturalization interview, first the civics, then the language test, then we went over my application thoroughly. Overall, it probably took around 30 minutes. At the end, she said that she approved both my applications and asked me if I had any questions. Oh, yes, I did.

I asked her what would happen to my I-751 and whether I would receive my 10-year green card at all. She offered that she was "recommending" me for approval on the I-751, but that her decision had to be validated by her supervisor since she didn't have authority to approve that petition, so she indicated that I should receive either an approval notice or an RFE, if her supervisor disagreed with her criteria. She also said that they would still send my 10-year green card, which I shall give back at the naturalization ceremony. I also asked about the naturalization ceremony timeline since I have a planned trip overseas in late February, but it will take 6-to-8 weeks, apparently.

The day after the interview I received an email saying that my I-751 had been approved and that a notice was sent, which I have not yet received as of today. I also got the notification that my naturalization ceremony invitation will be send shortly. So, overall, a rather smooth and pleasant experience. I'm glad I could do my combo interview, being approved for both cases, and that my wife was not even required to attend the interview.

I hope my experience is useful for those of you who are still hanging in there. Good luck!

I spoke with several officers over the last few months and here is what they have told me.

Your file has to be sent to the NBC when you apply for the N-400. Regardless of who has it or what is being done with it, it will be sent back immediately. Mine was laying in the local office waiting for a decision on my ROC.

Depending on the IO (there level and willingness) they may do a combo interview even when it is not mentioned in the letter. It depends on several things including; is your file complete, did you bring your spouse, do they have time to do it, are they able to access both programs (they are not the same program), does their office allow it (I'm sure there are more reasons).

Now the fun part. Apparently there are more files with missing paperwork than used to be the norm. In my file all evidence submitted during the AOS was gone by the time the looked at my file for the ROC. So I got an RFE for that one. Ones they had that they forwarded it to the local office for an interview. During the interview the officer told me my wife's divorce papers were missing too (luckily I had copies). The file than stayed at the local office for 130 days without anybody doing anything (It than moved to the NBC for the N400). When I had my N400 interview, I was told that the ROC had not been processed since the content of the original envelope, the one I handed in when I entered on my I-129F 4 years ago, never made it into my file until about a week ago. As I was her last interview of the day and she was authorized to do so, she promised me she would hammer both of them out after I left. At about 6pm local time I got the approved message for both the ROC and the N400.

    I applied online.
    - open USCIS online account, because you need it to apply for N400.
    - Prepare your documents as .pdf or .jpeg, put them in one folder on your computer and name them accordingly, for easiest access and upload.
No need to mail anything, online submit online. Payment is also done online in the end of the application. You can pause application , and enter it for updates for 30 days, before final click on “submit” button😃

You can find check list of needed documents on USCIS web-site. Very easy.
    -green card
-extension letter (in case you don’t have green card from I-751)
    - marriage certificate (in case of previous marriages of both spouses, proof of divorce etc)
    - birth certificate of children
    - US passport copy / birth certificate/ or certification of naturalization of US spouse (petitioner)
    - proofs of marriage with your both names on it (lease, house mortgage, insurances, joint bank accounts)
    - tax documents from the beginning of the marriage
    - some  photos (I added same from I-751 and new ones also)
    - bank statements (I submitted few from each year since the beginning of marriage)

Maybe I forgot something but you will find it on USCIS check list for N400.

when you finish, you will find your case in a form to print out for you want.

That's the thing, it was never clear to me and when I asked a Tier 2 officer, they said they didn't know either. According to that notice that I received, yeah, they sent the ROC after the N400+ROC interview to speed things up and NBC presumably approved it. But this is all just a guess, based on the letter I received.

OhWait reacted to MHZ in N 400 interview with pending I 751
Guys, you do know there is a whole thread with 67 pages of correspondence dedicated to this , right?

I completely understand your concerns. While I saw other posts with experiences that contradict my own, I can only offer mine.
I would encourage you to be safe than sorry and if you can take your spouse then do so.

    Background:
My case was also submitted to CSC. My I-751 was Nov/2016 and N-400 was Nov 2017.

    Interview Notice:
I received  the N-400 notice on May 1st and I did not receive a notice for an I-751 interview.

    Preparing for the Interview:
My wife couldn't make it to the interview as she had to take her class to a school trip, so she had her principle write an official letter explaining why she couldn't make it. A week before the interview, I prepared 2 brief cases:
Briefcase #1: Contained all original document from when I applied to enter the US till the week before the interview. That included a copy of all applications, notices received from USCIS, DHS and the embassy, I-20, EAD cards, publications, wedding receipts, marriage licence and certificate, Life insurance, medical insurance, auto insurance, rental insurance, Lease agreements, bills, joint credit cards, individual bank statements (3 month segments) that shows transactions between our accounts, joint bank statement, phone bills and contracts, taxes, photos of the wedding, vacations we took, birth certificates, passports,...etc Brief case #2: Contained a photocopy of all the was in brief case #1 The day of the interview:
I went in with my 2 brief cases to the Detroit office and got through security and initial check in. I took a seat and waited for my name to be called. Once my name was called, I went inside with the officer into a private office. He closed the door  and asked me to place my things on the side. He asked me to raise my hand and swear to tell the truth,.... I took a seat and asked if we are doing the N-400 and I-751 combined and he answered yes, he will take care of both cases during our time together. I asked if my wife is needed and he said no.

    Phase 1: The I-751 portion
Hes aid we will start with the I-751 and asked me for my ID and Green card, and I explained that USCIS took my card when I got the stamp. He asked if I got a replacement for it and I said no. He opened the door and fetched another officer and had me sign an affidavit that my card got confiscated and had the other officer witness it. He made a copy and gave it to me saying that I will need to take it with me to the oath instead of my green card and that I will not be able to take the oath without it.

He browsed through my GIANT folder and asked me to present our tax filings for 2017 and bank statements for 2018.  He scanned them into the system and returned them to me.
He proceeded to ask me questions about my identity like my birth date, country of origin, Employer, addresses and such. He asked me the same questions about my spouse.
He then asked some questions about us and our marriage like where we met, how long have we been married,  when we met each others families, how long we dated before getting married, and such.
Finally, he asked the normal security questions like being a communist, terrorist, criminal,....etc.

Once that was done, he said he will approve my I-751 and we can proceed to the N-400 and that If I get my citizenship and receive a green card, I will need to mail it back to the USCIS office. He was adamant about that one!

    Phase 2: The N-400 portion

He Asked me if I want to change my name at this time and I said yes. I provided him with the new name (it was actually a drop of one of my middle names) and he got me to fill a short form and confirm my info. He then gave me a paper and said I will need to take it with me to the oath ceremony and that the judge will give me an official paper along with the naturalization certificate for the name change.

He printed 4 sheets. The first sheet was a list of 10 questions from the Civics test. He asked 6 and I answered all correctly.  The questions were things like, why the early immigrants came to the north america, What does the first amendment state as a right, who has the right to vote,...etc.

The second sheet contained a question " Which state in the united states has the most people?" He asked me to read it.
The last sheet he gave me with a pen and asked me to write down," California has the most people."

Once that was done, he asked me questions to the effect that I am willing to take the oath. It included things like I f I am willing to renounce allegiance to other nations , governments and kings. If I am willing to bear arms if required by law, ...etc.

Once all that was done, he said congratulations and gave me a paper indicating the approval and said to wait for the oath notice then escorted me out.

    Conclusion:

I did not need my spouse I only needed my latest taxes and bank statements I needed the 2 papers he gave me to go to the oath.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have more questions.

    Good luck!

I happened before, not too often though. I've seen this in some cases. What's more often is they would do a combo interview I-751/N-400 all in one and they could approve both. Obviously did not happen in this case. You can only wait and keep dinging them on the I-751. You could have asked "the white guy" to see if he could pull the I-751 and adjudicate that.

OhWait reacted to praizee in n400 pending for 10 months after interview
I attended my interview October 2017. Officer said it looks good and he just has to review my file a bit more. i have been very patient with them as im not only outside of processing times but way outside the 120 day window.

i have files 4 service requests, contacted congressman and been to 3 infopasses.

Initially the response was "pending adjudication" but now "pending security checks"

I don't want to take the lawsuit route yet. My next option is Ombudsman but i dont even know if that is effective. I'm emotionally drained by this whole process. I applied based on 5yr rule. No criminal record and i'm not from a muslim country. I just have few traffic citations. I don't know why USCIS is trying to frustrate me for no reason. It's been over a year since i filed.

Anybody been through this weird ordeal and how did they get it resolved because this doesn't make any sense

File a claim with ombudsman after you get your Senator involved.  Ask for a resubmission of Biometrics when they expire which will generate a new set of prints to complete background checks on.  Human error on fingerprints is at a high rate and they are trying to fix the problem with the new fingerprinting system.

Questions are fine, that is why we are here.

As to the ROC interview, it was very basic.  The IO asked both of us to verify the information on the form such as address, phone numbers, email, employment.  Then she asked us if we had any additional evidence to add to the package and we added the last two tax return transcripts since we had filed the I751. Beyond that, it was very basic.  The interview was in Detroit since that is our local office.  When the N400 interview notice was scheduled, the ROC was still sitting at CSC as far as I knew.  We got the online messages like everyone else, but based on what I read, I assumed it was actually transferred to Detroit to combine it with the N400 which was actually the case as the IO in Detroit clearly had our I751 package in front of her.  We never received an interview notice for the I751, but I made sure I was with my wife for her N400 as I had read that many couples were interviewed at their local office during the N400 interview.which was indeed the case for us as well.  After the interview, it sounded like the ROC was approved, and my wife did get the notice that the N400 was recommended for approval.  Then a few days later we received the transfer to NBC notice, and online it said the N400 was approved awaiting the oath to be scheduled.  It was like that for a month, then we received the NOA telling us the ROC was approved and a few days later the oath was scheduled for June 11th.

    I hope that helps.

    Good Luck!

The ROC can be approved by the officer who adjudicates the N-400.  Most of the officers do not know this and I have seen many different posts.  One where someone was verbally told they were approved for both and should have oath within 60 days (which did not happen) and someone told they could not approve the N-400, but by the time that person reached the train station, both ROC/USC petitions were approved.

The officer will need to request and review the ROC petition, which they may have access to, but not fully understand.  Send several correspondences with your ROC/USC NOA's to the field office and request they be approved together.  If I were you, I would send triplicates to the field office and to both service centers that received ROC & USC petitions.  Just bother the heck out of them!
