If you end up getting rings just to wear at the interview - get silver ones - much cheaper than gold, lots of people have platinum wedding bands so silver-coloured bands are not unusual.

You can get a silver wedding band for less than $30

I'm no expert but if he comes here on a student (non-immigrant) visa to be with her, isn't that immigration fraud? When the couple files an adjustment of status, they'll have to document their relationship, such as how they met, how they stayed together, etc.

By telling the truth, that he came to the USA on a F1 non-immigrant visa to be with her (a citizen), then he violated his stated intent (to study). So that's a red flag for the AOS process.

Alternatively, they could say, oh - we used to know each other a long time ago, then he came to the USA to study and we "miraculously" found each other again. That's falsification of evidence and immigration fraud.

Perhaps the best thing to do is visit your boyfriend in Ghana time to time, document the relationship, and apply for a K-1 visa once your divorce is finalized. If you really love each other, which I don't doubt, you'll be able to make your relationship work in spite of the inconveniences.

If you give your country we can be of more help.

You would likely be obtaining an original certified copy; the original that was created when you were born is maintained by the custodian of the record, and is never taken away from that authority's possession, a copy given to you (or your parents) is certified by the authority to be a true and accurate copy of the one in the authority's records.

Some governmental agencies in the US, such as the Social Security Administration, may ask to see an original certified copy of your birth certificate; it's something everyone should have, if you can obtain one.

USCIS may ask to see an original certified copy.

You should obtain a new certified copy from the appropriate authority in your country of birth.

There are USCIS and consular officers active on this forum.

They probably won't ask for it, but it's in the list of documents you need to take with you to the interview. if it's asked you can explain and hope for the best.
if I were you though, I'd ask my parents to get a new copy for me and have them send it out as soon as possible, if not for the interview, for your own records.

This was mine and my husbands second marriage. We paid $50 for a courthouse wedding, Only had my 2 step-kids with us, ate steak after and fell asleep on the couch for the rest of the afternoon LOL

That's really lovely and I like your story. When my husband and I eloped, we didn't get rings because we're young, silly, and like to think we're iconoclastic. The wedding officiant was a little by perplexed how we stumbled in. You beat us!

I'd have loved to go to your wedding. We didn't have a reception either. First, we visited his parents and told them that we'd eloped. Our best friend knew because she was the witness. We told others as we came across them, since neither of us is active on social media. Eventually, my husband and I hosted a home-cooked dinner for his family and a few of our closest friends (~15 people; my parents couldn't fly in because it was too expensive). Hopefully the lack of a reception won't be a red flag. Your post makes me feel better.

Heh, thanks. We didn't do a wedding cake either, but we got a blueberry muffin from the bakery (hubby's favorite), and we put a unicorn and Batman figurines on top, like cake toppers. Then did the whole cutting it with both our hands and giving a piece to each other. Lots of fun!

My ring is a silver unicorn, and my husband has a silvery Batman ring. We couldn't afford the nice ones so we decided to go for something that's totally us. We have the pics from our wedding and everything. People always love it when we explain, and they're totally personal to us.

Wedding rings are a personal preference. Mine is white gold with diamonds and was on sale for $75. My husband has a tungsten wedding band on sale from $150 to $20 (bargain!!). Rings do not have to cost a fortune. But you should not have to bend to society's perspective of what's right or wrong. If you don't want a wedding band that's up to all. Its most certainly not a requirement to wear one for AOS.

I wouldn't worry about it, it's personal choice and if they mention it just give your exact reasonings. If you're secure in your relationship and why you don't want them then that should be all that will make a difference to the interviewer. I got a very cheap set of rings for the pair of us for 'ceremonies' sake when we got married. Silver, crazy cheap rings that I bought off Amazon a week or so before. For Christmas my husband paid for an updated design for me not because I feel more secure with a ring on, but because with it on I don't get inappropriate comments from other men or any unnecessary advances. I'm probably going to have to take it off soon though as I'm pregnant and my fingers have been swelling. Haha!

So many of the ring tattoos, where a ring design is tattooed onto the wedding ring finger, I've seen are really pretty but I was too much of a wuss to get it done, I have threatened my husband with it though

I know you're asking about coming to be in the States with him, but that would be very difficult. Any chance he could come and be with you somewhere outside the States? I came to be with my fiance outside the States during the K1 visa wait. It's very difficult and hard to survive at all sometimes, but at least you'd be together. Just a thought. I wish you guys luck! <3

A student visa has the purpose that you can study in the US. There is NO OTHER PURPOSE than studying.
As if I'm not mistaken you also need to find an university first who would accept you as an international student. And then you can apply for a student visa. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Where are you in the process?
If you haven't actually applied for a K-1 yet, then there is nothing for you to withdraw. The petitioner should withdraw the I-129F, though - in case he decides to petition anybody else ever, or in case you get petitioned by anybody else.
If you have filed for the K-1, then contact the embassy to withdraw your application.

That said, the presumption (by law) is that you are an intending immigrant. Having a recent K-1 application will likely be viewed with skepticism for any non-immigrant visa. It's conspicuous timing to terminate an immigrant-intent visa  and then immediately just-so-happen to want to attend school in the US. You are free to try, but I think it's a pretty low chance of success at this time.

Rings aren't required. Plus men didn't wear wedding bands at all traditionally in the U.K. so it's not like it's a long standing traditional custom. Only since like the 40's have they done it and not all do.

If, and only if, you do want to get rings you don't have to go traditional expensive either, mine are from tiffanys but I don't have diamonds so they were both reasonable, $125 each. Mostly I just wanted a ring from Tiffany's on 5th avenue. They are the 1837 collection in stirling silver and titanium. My husband can't wear rings so he was never going to have one.

You could do anything - get them on necklaces, tattooed on, have piercings instead, or not have rings.

It should be an expression of yourselves and if that means not having rings then so be it.

We do not have rings and the interview went fine. It was never brought up during the interview, in which I was approved on the spot.
I've had my green card for 8 months now.

sometimes I do think about getting one, but I hate jewelry and hate the thought of only getting one to try and keep idiot guys away (or to try and get the harassment level I have to deal with to a lower level)

Rings aren't required, but do show a small amount of commitment, however in the end it's just a piece of gold anyone can buy if they can afford it. My husband and I never got rings when we got married, instead we traded engagement rings with each other (yes we both had one, we're not a traditional couple, shut up lol) =P

You could get cubix and not over indulge. You could get costume jewelry or custom Etsy jewelry.
Regardless I highly doubt it matters all that much aside from the symbolism it doesn't mean much to one w/ a pragmatic/objective approach like USCIS.  Scammers and fakers can get rings.
